Full-Time Sanctuary Animal Care Management Team Member

Organization Description: One Heart Wild Education Sanctuary, located in Silverdale, WA, was founded in 2015 and is home to approximately 70 animals adopted after exposure to abuse and neglect, many are from large and small animal agriculture operations. One Heart Wild (OHW) works with reputable nonprofit animal rescue organizations and veterinarians who refer animals in need of permanent placement. At OHW every animal resident is given refuge, rehabilitation, and a lifetime of personalized species-appropriate care. Expect to care for animal residents of all ages from bottle-fed to super seniors. The Sanctuary management team is multidisciplinary and focused on excellence in all aspects of animal resident physical, mental, emotional, and age-related well-being. Animal Care Management team members work with the Sanctuary Manager, volunteers, board members, and Executive Director to collaborate on providing high-quality care required by the multiple species in residence at One Heart Wild.

One Heart Wild programs include a vibrant volunteer program, animal/equine-assisted therapy, ROOTS Institute Animal Assisted Therapy/Self Development Certification, and outreach programs for schools and community organizations.

Job Description: Full-time Sanctuary animal care management team member shares responsibility for daily cleaning, feeding, maintenance of enclosures, repairs of fencing, laundry, restocking supplies, grooming animals, cleaning and organizing, and miscellaneous tasks as assigned. This position is fast-paced, physically/mentally/emotionally demanding, requires the ability to patiently adapt to regular changes in routines day to day and in the moment, and commitment to work in all weather conditions.

Must-Have Requirements:

  • Open-minded and willingness to learn (even when new information contradicts previously held beliefs)
  • Minimum of 2 years previous animal care experience that includes comfort with horses. Applicants who do not meet this requirement may wish to consider an internship position (see website for application)
  • Live within 30 minutes of the Sanctuary
  • Fluent in spoken and written English – multilingual applicants are welcome to apply
  • Physically fit, able to reach, bend, stoop, squat, lift up to 50 pounds without assistance, push/pull heavy wheelbarrow over uneven and slippery terrain
  • Valid driver’s license, ability to pass a background check
  • Reliable transportation, willingness to work any shift Monday – Sunday

Qualifications & Responsibilities:

  • Passionate about working for and with all kinds of animals
  • Personal interest in and awareness of animal welfare and rights issues
  • Lovingly providing food, water, special diets, and medications
  • Meticulously clean animal feed and water containers and enclosures
  • Implement veterinary care protocols, following exact directions
  • Participate in animal health care appointments as needed; hoof trims, nail trims, equine dentistry, emergencies, and other similar appointments
  • Taking animals to veterinary appointments
  • Running errands for food, supplies, and assigned tasks
  • Initiating and helping with maintenance on shelters, fences, grounds, pastures
  • Working with and training volunteers and interns
  • Leading tours, helping with events, and supporting fundraising activities and efforts
  • Assist in maintaining records as required for each animal ongoing, and during intensive care periods (may require additional trips to Sanctuary)
  • Regularly contributing content for the website and social media
  • Can maintain composure and ability to follow direction or lead under stressful situations
  • Extremely observant and able to notice and understand the importance of communicating subtle changes in animals’ appearance and behavior
  • Ability to work in all weather conditions, capable of driving to work in all conditions
  • Ability to work patiently with all kinds of people and animal personalities
  • Willingness to learn and process information quickly, ability to follow detailed instructions, ask for clarification and meet deadlines
  • Works well as part of a team, self-motivated, can also work well independently without being told what to do
  • Able to fix and if needed build things – when something doesn’t work, you fix or report it, and follow up – resourceful – roll up your sleeves attitude
  • Ability to take initiative to resolve problems and seek solutions independently while keeping the team informed
  • Follow and model safety standards and practices for volunteers and guests

Wage: $18 - 20/hr depends on experience

Hours: Approximately 32+ hours per week. Day shifts weekdays, weekends, holidays. Occasional evening feeding shifts and emergency or intensive care assistance.

Pay Frequency: 10th of every month
