About the Indiana War Memorials Commission (IWMC):
The Indiana War Memorial Plaza Historic District consists of 25 acres of monuments, statues and sculptures in the heart of downtown Indianapolis which includes three parks – University Park, Veterans Memorial Plaza and American Legion Mall, the Indiana War Memorial and its 30,000 square foot museum, the Soldiers and Sailors Monument, the USS Indianapolis CA-35 Memorial, the Medal of Honor Memorial, the Indiana 9/11 Memorial and the Indiana Gold Star Families Memorial Monument. No state has a city with more monuments dedicated to veterans than Indiana’s capital, and no city in the country maintains more acreage honoring veterans than Indianapolis. Salary:
The salary for this position traditionally starts at $15.17 an hour, but may be commensurate with education or work experience.
Role Overview:
This position will be perfect for the individual who is professional, outgoing, and proud to be on the Indiana War Memorials team. You will greet visitors from all over the world and work in our gift shop. In many cases, you will be the only representative of our agency visitors to our city and state will meet, so first impressions are critical. Your work locations will be either at the Soldiers and Sailors Monument or at the Indiana War Memorial, where our 30,000 square-foot-museum is located. If you are seeking a position that is different every day, is critical to our mission, and can be a lot of fun, this is for you.
Hours of Operation:
This is a part-time position will require that candidates work four 8-hour shifts throughout the week. The typical operating hours are Wednesday through Sunday from 10:00am to 6:00pm, and candidates will have the opportunity to select four shifts to build their schedule.
About the Job:
The Gift Shop and Museum Attendant will handle merchandise transactions, assist in general housekeeping and display maintenance, provide outstanding customer service, maintain awareness of special events or promotions and be comfortable relaying information to visitors. In addition, the incumbent should be able to answer general questions about downtown Indianapolis and nearby attractions along with basic historical information about the Indiana War Memorials Commission properties, monuments and memorials.
A Day in the Life:
The essential functions of this role are as follows:
- Prepare reports of the daily gift shop and tower sales;
- Maintain cash drawer;
- Assist in processing and replenishing inventory and monitoring merchandise levels;
- Assist in floor moves, display maintenance, merchandising and housekeeping;
- Answer inquiries about facility and merchandise;
- Assist in setup and preparation of event venue space.

What You'll Need for Success:
- One year work experience or high school diploma/ high school equivalency;
- Computer/ cash register experience;
- Customer service experience preferred;
- Ability to read, count, write, and make simple arithmetic computations to accurately complete all documentation;
- Ability to lift 50 pounds;
- Must be able to ascend and descend stairs as needed, up to 300 steps;
- Ability to work in adverse weather conditions and work varied hours/days, including nights, weekends and holidays as needed;
Supervisory Responsibilities/Direct Reports:
This role does not provide direct supervision to direct reports.
