Dauphin County Prison is currently accepting applications for the part-time position of Prison Teacher. This is responsible professional work in remedial, vocational, and continuing education at Dauphin County Prison. An employee in this position plans and delivers instruction, identifies resources, administers diagnostic and achievement tests, evaluates students' progress, and makes appropriate recommendations consequent to same. The individual in this position is responsible for but not limited to performing the following essential functions: administers pre-instructional testing, evaluating results and planning instruction consequent to same; instructs new students in fundamental study skills; applies appropriate instructional modalities as students' needs require; undertakes classroom instruction in pre-reading, ABE, GED, general remedial topics, and English as a Second Language (ESL); attends Education and Treatment staff meetings as scheduled; attends trainings and conferences to maintain Act 48 certification requirements; maintains open communication with Education Coordinator; maintains records of attendance and attainment; completes and submits required reports; networks with regional agencies and institutions for purpose of resource development and exchange; post-tests students for education progress; and performs related tasks, as necessary or as directed by proper authority. Additionally, he/she may assist in-service staff training. The incumbent reports to the Education Coordinator and ultimately to the Director of Treatment. Hourly Rate is Commensurate with Experience.

Minimum Education, Experience, and Training Requirements

  • Graduation from an accredited college or university, with major coursework in elementary, secondary, special, or adult education or a related field; plus
  • One year of experience in education.
  • A valid Pennsylvania teaching certificate and completion of mandated Act 48 credits.
  • Advanced coursework in adult or corrections education may be substituted at the rate of 30 academic credits per year of professional experience.

Other Requirements

It is expected that the successful candidate will attain, within one calendar year of appointment, certification in First-Aid, Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR); and will maintain said certification for the duration of his/her employment.
