Preferred Qualifications
Excellent computer skills and proficiency in Microsoft Excel are required. Payroll experience is preferred.

Job Description Summary
The University of South Alabama’s department of Payroll Accounting is seeking to hire three Payroll Specialists. Interested candidates should apply to be considered.

Essential Functions

These are the job duties required of the position.

Essential Functions
  • Uses the Banner system to enter health system personnel action forms to include appointments, salary and labor changes, terminations, etc.
  • Reviews and audits time transactions in the Kronos timekeeping system to ensure time and leave policies are followed.
  • Provides back up for the process of calculating pay outs for terminating and resigning Health system employees.
  • Assists with the processing of one-time payments and retro pay for health system employees. Provides back up for monitoring and reviewing of the daily audit trail to identify file maintenance errors.
  • Processes transfers between companies to include PTO pay outs and verifying benefits and deductions are set up accurately.
  • Reviews timesheets for Healthcare Management to ensure they meet policy.
  • Responsible for accurate and timely on-line file maintenance for employees, to include taxes, direct deposits and other deductions as necessary.
  • Records changes in rates and labor change account distributions for employees.
  • Reviews web time entry time sheets for exempt employees for the Health System to ensure leave and time policies are followed.
  • Responsible for monitoring and updating payroll security.
  • Assists in processing uniform deductions for the Healthcare System and communicates with employees and corresponding departments to ensure accuracy of deductions.
  • Provides back up for calculating and remitting wage garnishment, child support and tax levy deductions as needed.
  • Provides back up for other payroll employees to include auditing, entering, and checking timesheets and applying personnel policies relating to time and attendance.
  • Communicates with employees by telephone and in person concerning wages, taxes and deductions, and explains gross to net variances.
  • Prepares and analyzes reports in Microsoft Excel.
  • Covers other areas of responsibility during absences.
  • Ensures confidentiality of employee information.
  • Regular and prompt attendance.
  • Ability to work schedule as defined and overtime as required, which may include holidays.
  • Related duties as required.
