Pest Control Coordinator


This full-time, non-exempt position is dedicated to maintaining the pest control on Lincoln Park Zoo grounds, in food services, and within buildings. These concerns include addressing rodents, birds, insects, and others species that may impact the health and welfare of the zoo-managed species. The positioned is housed within Animal Care and supervised by the Director of Veterinary Services.


The ~700 animal, ~220 species population has hoofed animals, megavertebrates, marine mammals, carnivores, non-human primates, birds, herptiles, fish, and invertebrates which need to be protected from impact of pests. The Pest Control Coordinator is responsible for development and maintenance of the facility’s pest management including both chemical and biological options, and are focused on integrated pest management (IPM) goals. Accurate records for these activities are to be provided in clear English and utilizing zoo software. Rotation and inventory control of necessary pest control supplies is the responsibility of this position, including advising of their supervisor on budgetary impact and new and developing options for IPM. Safe application for both personnel and managed animal health is paramount, although humane address of pest control is expected.


Regular communication with management is expected for immediate response needs and long-term seasonal control of concerns. Educational opportunities for PCC to share knowledge with front-line husbandry and facilities team member are expected to improve and maintain grounds and buildings against harborage. Development of new protocols and revision of historic procedures with new knowledge and impacts to the role will be needed.


It is preferred that an applicant has an AA or BS in biological sciences or related discipline, although trade school certification in pest control management will be considered equivalent. Applicants are expected to have a minimum of two (2) years of experience in a pest control management setting, and preferably in a personally licensed capacity. It is strongly desired that an applicant has experience in pest management in sensitive environments, such as a zoo, aquarium, hospital, food handling establishments, or school.


Applicants must be able to obtain pest control applicator’s licensure from the State of Illinois (https://agr.illinois.gov/pesticides/certification-and-licensing.html) within three (3) months of employment commencement. City of Chicago mosquito control license will be obtained once employee is established in the program. License fees and continuing education for license maintenance are provided by Lincoln Park Zoo.
