Job Description

National Director of Drug Procurement and Utilization


Purpose of Job:

The National Director of Drug Procurement and Utilization will provide senior clinical oversight to all aspects of chemotherapy and oncolytic drug purchasing, supply chain management, and inventory management. Reporting to the Chief Medical Officer with close matrix reporting to senior finance and utilization management leadership, the National Director will also advise on all matters related to medication management, therapeutic substitutions, new FDA approvals, and drug administration safety. The following is a list of assigned duties which will be under the purview of the National Director with other activities as assigned by the Chief Medical Officer (or his or her designee). This role reports to the Chief Medical Officer.


Responsibilities

  • Execution of IV/IM drug ordering for all markets and clinic locations.
  • Inventory management of ordered infusible therapeutics to ensure adequate drug supplies to meet patient and business needs, and maximize utilization of non-moving inventory.
  • Regular review of changes in therapeutic pricing and margin in conjunction with finance and UM admin/operational leadership to ensure optimal profitability and procurement on infusible therapeutics.
  • Auditing of inventory to maintain compliance with public company reporting requirements and patient care needs.
  • Partner with finance and accounting teams to maintain accurate inventory reporting as required for a public company.
  • Partner with Utilization Management team in:
    • Chemotherapy, immunotherapy, and supportive therapy drug regimen selection
    • Ensuring appropriate use of therapeutic regimen
    • Enacting therapeutic substitution strategies according to contract formularies and national guidelines
  • Uploads and maintains drug treatment regimens in electronic health record system.
  • Works with nursing leadership to ensure safety of drug administration.
  • Serve as the pharmacy subject matter expert for the practice and consult with physicians and APPs on drug regimens, side effects, alternatives, etc.
  • Develop and maintain an understanding of Oncology drugs in the market and development pipeline, and report on drug cost and reimbursement trends.
  • In addition shall include but not be limited to:
  • Close partnership with the Senior Medical Director of Utilization Management and Senior Director of Clinical Services in management of medication budgeting and spending
  • Partner with the business development team to assist in matters of contracting, acquisitions, and payor relations
  • Recruit and train new clinical leaders to ensure adequate support for practice growth
  • Be a regular member of the Executive Leadership meetings, and report out to the Executive team on progress.
  • Work with CMO to ensure all high-level annual clinical goals are met.
  • Drive payor and medical group relations through attendance at regional JOCs and other key meetings.
  • Partner with UM medical directors to ensure appropriate utilization patterns and adoption of new protocols by physicians.
  • Partner with CMO and head of clinical trials to ensure region is performing to goal with respect to adoption of new clinical trials and enrollment of appropriate patients.
  • Performs other duties as assigned and modified at CMO's discretion.

Experience, Education, and Qualifications

  • Pharm D
  • Licensed by appropriate state pharmacy board
  • Minimum five to eight years experience providing medical direction and oversight to teams
  • Experience and knowledge of multi-ethnic and community-based clinic environment
  • MBA or MHA highly desirable
  • Prior leadership work for a multi-state oncology practice or similar organization highly desirable

  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite products including Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook, plus a variety of other word-processing, spreadsheet, database, e-mail and presentation software
  • Ability and willingness to travel locally, regionally and nationwide up to 15%of the time
  • Spoken and written fluency in English
  • Ability to use and exercise of sound independent judgment and discretion

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • Frequently required to sit for extended periods of time, stand, walk, and reach with hands and arms
  • Ability to apply manual dexterity including hand/wrist flexibility for computer keyboarding
  • Occasionally required to sit, bend, kneel, stoop, or crouch
  • May be required to lift, move, and carry up to 15 lbs.
  • Specific vision abilities required include close vision, color vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus
  • Frequently required to hear and speak in order to use telephone, make presentations, and communicate with people in an office and clinic environment
  • Ability to communicate verbally on the phone and in person
  • Extended hours may be needed
Salary Range Estimate: $170,000 - $200,000
