Position Overview

The Planner located in the Current Planning Section of the Planning and Inspections Department processes applications for rezoning of properties located within the County and eight municipalities. This position aids public in the understanding and accomplishment of compliance with the County and eight municipal subdivisions and zoning ordinances and the review processes.

Examples of Duties

  • Independently represent the County and the Planning and Inspections department as the assigned planner assisting town governments as assigned with planning and zoning
  • Respond to public contact via walk-in, telephone and email, explains procedures, rules and processes to individuals who desire to initiate or revise existing land development or to inform the property owner/development the possible avenues for correcting issues or violations existing on their property
  • Review the rezoning application for completeness and accuracy and discusses the plans with the applicant to ensure the requested zoning will allow the intended use and is consistent with adopted plans and policies
  • Work on projects, long-range planning or research assigned by Current Planning Manager

Minimum Qualifications

Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with a degree in urban or regional planning, geography, public administration, engineering, community development, or a related field, and one (1) year of experience in technical and administrative support work preferably in a local government planning office; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Management Preference: AICP certification is preferred

Negative drug screen and background check are required.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Knowledge of the principles and practices of community and economic development and public sector planning and/or landscape design
  • Knowledge of governmental laws, programs, and services pertinent to the community and economic development and planning processes
  • Knowledge of GIS systems including application of software, hardware and peripherals to planning needs
