- Must Have Worked at the Journey Level in the Public Safety Supervisor Band for at Least two (2) years (Sergeant, Staff Sergeant, or above).
- Classes Required Upon Promotion:Management Essentials (NCSU Training)LEAD Foundations (NCSU Training)
Lieutenant II:
- Meets/Exceeds Expectations on Annual Performance Appraisal
- Recommendation from Chain of Command
- Complete at least three (3) years as Lieutenant
- Complete the following training:200 Hours of Electives from NCJA Management Development Program, Administrative Officers Management Program (AOMP), FBI National Academy, or Other Program Approved by the Chief of Police
Lieutenant III :
- Meets/Exceeds Expectations on Annual Performance Appraisal
- Recommendation from Chain of Command
- Complete at least three (3) years as 2nd Lieutenant
- Complete the following training:200 Hours of Electives from NCSU Equivalent to ULEAD (at UNC Chapel Hill) or Executive Leadership
- Other duties as assigned by the Chief.
High school diploma, or possession of a high school equivalency certificate and two years of law enforcement experience. Additional Education and Experience will be necessary for progressive steps (Journey and Advanced).
Necessary Special Qualifications:
Certification as a law enforcement officer in accordance with the provisions of the North Carolina Criminal Justice Training and Standards Commission or the ability to achieve certification within one year of employment.
- Applicant must be able to wear and use personal protective equipment.
- Applicants must successfully pass the North Carolina Police Officer Physical Abilities Test (POPAT) prior to final offer of employment and must be able to pass the Cooper assessment annually as a condition of employment.
- To be eligible for Lieutenant an employee has to have served at the journey level in the Public Safety Supervisor Band (SGT 1, SGT 2 or SGT 3 ) for a period of 2 years and have either 60 credit hours towards a degree program or have an Associates Degree.
- In addition, the candidate must have their Advanced LE Certificate.
- It is required that Lieutenants have 60 semester hours of college or an Associate’s Degree.
- Lieutenants must have an Advance Law Enforcement certification.
- Valid driver’s license required.
- Valid North Carolina driver’s license within 60 days of hire.
