The Deep South Center for Environmental Justice (DSCEJ) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to improving the lives of children and families harmed by pollution and vulnerable to climate change in the Gulf Coast Region through research, education, community and student engagement for policy change, as well as health and safety training for environmental careers. DSCEJ directs projects involving universities and community-based organizations in seven states.
The National Black Environmental Justice Network (NBEJN) builds the power and capacity of frontline organizations, experts, and professional leaders in environmental justice, to lead powerful, transformative, and dynamic social change. With our community-based partner groups, we bridge the grassroots and the national, supporting outsider strategies to disrupt the status quo while also building pathways to influence the insider conversation. Our vision of a better world centers the leadership of impacted Black people, communities, and organizations to move our work on environmental justice forward.
Position Summary:
Reporting to the Director of Law and Public Policy and working in partnership with the NBEJN Team, the Policy Research Coordinator will assist in developing and implementing advocacy strategies that engage policymakers, key stakeholders, and build coalitions around environmental and climate justice issue areas. The Policy Research Coordinator will be responsible for tracking, developing, and analyzing policy proposals, legislative activities, and relationships; preparing drafts of timely and compelling advocacy materials - including but not limited to official organizational statements and op-eds; supporting the development and maintenance of policymaker, coalition, and stakeholder relationships; and providing administrative support to advance DSCEJ and NBEJN’s policy stances. This position will also work closely with NBEJN Network Manager and grassroots organizations to maximize NBEJN’s presence and impact in advancing our progressive governing agenda at the national and state levels.

Duties & Responsibilities
GENERAL
- Research, track, analyze, and provide regular assessments of legislative and policy activity relevant to our issue areas;
- Attend and support regular meetings, calls, and communications with policymakers and stakeholders;
- Draft and edit policy, advocacy, and public facing materials to present to policymakers and EJ community based organizations;
- Draft public-facing documents such as fact sheets and blog posts about legal and policy issues surrounding environmental and climate justice in order to build robust public support;
- Provide technical and policy based support to community partners;
- Collaborate with Communications Team to develop outreach strategies;
- Provide administrative support to the Policy Team, including scheduling, note-taking, agenda and meeting materials development, project management, and maintaining calendar
Qualifications & Requirements
- Experience prioritized - significant previous work experience in Community Based Organizing, Environmental Justice, Environmental Science, Climate Related Work, Public Policy, Social Justice or related fields
- Bachelor’s degree - preferably in environmental science, social sciences, public policy, political science or related field (additional graduate training is preferred)
- Outstanding communication (oral and written) skills
- Detail-oriented with strong organizational skills
Physical Requirements:
- Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer
- Must be able to access and navigate the office
- Occasional travel required
Salary & Benefits
- Salary range: $60-70K (negotiable with commensurate qualifications and experience)
