The Professor Practitioner position requires broad knowledge to teach courses in the following areas: songwriting, copyright, music publishing, digital music distribution, music promotion and marketing, artist management, audio recording, and other related popular music subjects. In addition, the successful candidate will direct popular music ensembles which require an appropriate level of musicianship, and the ability to teach and arrange music using industry standard chord charts. Other duties include advising music majors and supervising internships and practicums. The successful candidate must have excellent communication and interpersonal skills, the ability to multi-task, and the ability to provide an excellent learning environment for students to gain real-world knowledge for success in the music industry. Minimum of a Bachelor’s Degree from a regionally accredited institution with at least five years of related experience in the Music Industry.

Catawba College endeavors to offer the nation’s premier undergraduate education in environmental studies, where the study and practice of environmental stewardship and sustainability are infused throughout the curriculum. This position is the first of a series of planned hires of faculty in different disciplines that collaborate to model for all learners the use of interdisciplinary approaches to addressing important questions in environmental stewardship and sustainability.

The position presents a unique opportunity for an who is committed to undergraduate teaching in a learning environment that values the personal formation of students, the exploration of vocation, and interaction with faculty and students who routinely work across varied disciplines. The position provides occasions to teach in first-year seminars and the honors program. The candidate must value the ethos and rhythm of small-college life.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Teach a 4-4 course assignment during a traditional two-semester academic year, including courses for majors and non-majors in the following areas: songwriting, copyright, music publishing, digital music distribution, music promotion and marketing, artist management, audio recording, and other related popular music subjects opportunities for teaching online classes, including Winter Term and Summer Sessions, are available
  • Maintain office hours and provide academic advising and mentorship for students, both majors and non-majors
  • Support recruitment of students in the programs of Music Business and Popular Music
  • Assist in curriculum development, assessment, and review
  • Engage in service, such as faculty governance committee membership and involvement in college and community life
  • Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

  • Bachelors Degree in Music Business, Popular Music, Commercial Music or related fields and a minimum of five years of professional experience in the field.
  • Demonstration of excellence in teaching
  • Ongoing research and scholarly activity in Popular Music and the Music Industry
  • Desire and willingness to support the mission of Catawba College
  • Ability to work collegially and seek opportunities for cross-disciplinary collaboration
  • Ability to collegially work independently and collaboratively within the relevant departments and the greater Catawba community

ABOUT CATAWBA:

Founded in 1851 in Newton, North Carolina, Catawba was started by German pioneers who had traveled from eastern Pennsylvania to settle in the valleys of the Haw, Yadkin, and Catawba Rivers. In 1890, Catawba became a coeducational institution and the first woman graduate completed her studies in 1893. In 1925, Catawba moved and re-opened to its current location in Salisbury, NC, which is about 45 minutes from Greensboro, Winston-Salem, and Charlotte, two hours from the mountains, and four hours from the beaches.
