Position Summary:
A Postdoctoral Fellow position is available immediately in Florida Atlantic University’s Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institute (FAU-HBOI) in Fort Pierce, Florida. The position is for one year, with a possible second year likely but contingent on funding.
Summary of Responsibilities include:
  • The Fellow will have the opportunity to work on one or more closely related projects at the interface of ocean optics, cutting edge particle imaging, modelling, and biological oceanography, with the primary focus being assessing closure between optical property measurements and direct quantification of properties of particle fields.
  • The Fellow will be expected to participate in examining historical data sets of in situ optical properties and images from an underwater holographic microscope as well as developing or implementing existing data post-processing routines to assess marine particle and plankton characteristics collected from diverse optical environments.
  • Machine learning algorithms may be applied to quantify specific particle types.
  • Forward modeling will be used to derive optical properties from particle field measurements followed by validation with concurrent optical measurements collected in the field.
  • Some field work may be involved to collect new data sets for the analyses.
Minimum Qualifications:
PhD in Optics, Engineering, Physics, Oceanography, or related field is required to be completed prior to starting the position.

Graduate students close to defending their dissertation and/or current Postdocs looking for a new opportunity are encouraged to apply. Application reviews will begin immediately, so early applications are encouraged.

A strong experimental background in optics and modelling is required. Experience can include, but is not limited to, ocean optics. Candidates demonstrating a background working with in situ optical and image data sets, in particular digital holography and/or other 3-D imaging techniques will be given preference.

Demonstrable experience with conceptualizing, designing and executing projects individually and as part of a team is required. Proficiency with MATLAB is needed. Experience with writing manuscripts for peer-reviewed journal publications and presenting work at international conferences is required.
