The Principal Scientist, Process Safety is responsible for overseeing process safety activities supporting small scale development chemistry, kilo laboratory and plant scale manufacturing at Veranova, including (but not limited to) the Devens and North Andover pilot plants, as well as other Veranova sites.

The role involves literature support, physical testing of reactions and processes using equipment including differential scanning calorimetry, reaction calorimetry and thermal screening units. Data should be interpreted, assessments made on the hazard profile and suggestions provided for improvements. Active participation in follow on Process Hazard Assessments is expected.

ESSENTIAL

• PhD in Chemistry with 8 years’ experience in an industrial pharmaceutical or fine chemicals setting; or MS in in Chemistry or equivalent with 10 years’ experience; or BS in Chemistry or equivalent with 12 years’ experience.
• Minimum of 4 years direct experience in Process Safety.
• Demonstrated proficiency in evaluating the safety of chemical processes including hands on testing using equipment such as RC1 calorimeter, DSC and TSU.
• Experience/demonstrated understanding of scope and limitations of running processes in R&D laboratories, kilo laboratories, and plant scale.
• Understanding of dust explosivity testing and accelerated rate calorimetry. (ARC)
• Strong verbal and written communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills.
• Excellent organization skills and ability to prioritize and multi-task.
• Ability to successfully interface with internal and external clients.
• Ability to set and achieve budgeting within the scope of project management.
• Experience with project management and other management information systems.
• Experience with Microsoft Office suite and other job-related software.
• Ability to collaborate with interdepartmental teams.
• Able to work independently with minimal supervision.

• Demonstrate attention-to-detail and problem solving.
• Experience communicating to all levels of management.

VALUED

• Experience in an OSHA PSM regulated environment.
• Understanding of chemical engineering principles and how to apply them to process scale up.
• Practical experience in dust explosivity testing.
• Understanding/practical experience on ARC and other specialized calorimetric assessments.
• Experience in root cause investigations.
• Experience in FMEA studies, risk analysis and root cause investigations.
• Understanding of engineering controls for potent compounds handling.
