Position Overview:

The Chicago Botanic Garden has two part-time seasonal program assistant, Natural Areas, positions (approximately 21 hours/week, hours flexible) to start beginning in April/May through September/October. Individuals in this role will work with Garden staff to visit Chicago Park District Natural Areas to inspect and document conditions and share with Chicago Park District staff to assist in the management of these urban habitats.

In this role you will be responsible for the following:

• Inspect natural areas for issues of ecological, safety, or aesthetic concern using a standard site-inspection form.
• Assess natural areas maintenance efforts to determine if they are meeting performance standards, including native and invasive species coverage and diversity, floristic quality, and other ecological restoration metrics.
• Assess native seed, plug, shrub, and tree establishment and survivorship.
• Assess the condition of signage, fencing, benches, trails, and other park infrastructure relevant to user experience within and near natural areas.
• Collect geospatial information related to the above, such as with the ArcGIS Field Maps app.
• Meet regularly with Chicago Park District staff to advise and discuss site conditions and management strategies.
• Generate records and reports of inspection visits and findings.
• Compile previous reports, photos, and other data for comparison purposes as needed.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

• Bachelor of science degree in biology, environmental science, natural area management, or an appropriate related field, or a combination of formal/informal education and experience.
• At least one year of experience in the field performing ecological restoration activities, vegetation surveys, or other comparable public natural area stewardship or study.
• Experience identifying Chicago-area plants, particularly invasive species.
• Comfort traveling to neighborhoods throughout Chicago and being outdoors in public urban spaces.
• Ability to work independently and on a flexible schedule.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• Passion for the outdoors and urban public spaces.
• A valid driver’s license and access to a personal vehicle to travel to field sites.
• Access to field gear including sturdy boots, sun protection, biting insect protection, and hydration.
• Access to a smartphone, laptop, and email.

• Mileage reimbursement to coincide with federal rate
• Up to 21 hours per week, flexible, and weather-dependent

Physical Demands: Fieldwork involves walking over uneven terrain, or traversing distances of up to 2 miles while carrying equipment. Bending, stooping, and kneeling are often necessary. Fieldwork may occur during hot weather when insects are active and exposure to allergens like mold, pollen, and poison ivy are likely. Office work involves sitting, standing, typing, and using computers and copy machines.
