This position is responsible for coordinating public relations activities.

Duties & Responsibilities
MAJOR DUTIES

  • Responds to requests from the news media concerning programs or events at San Juan College; coordinates media interviews with college faculty, staff or students; assists in preparing faculty, staff and students for interviews.

  • Composes and distributes press releases and public service announcements concerning college programs and events.

  • Composes stories for the college Communicator and Annual Report; coordinates the efforts of contract writers and executes plans for a complete publication; compiles publications schedules; takes photographs for publications.

  • Produces content for and edits brochures, schedules, flyers, advertisements, and other publications.

  • Takes photographs of college locales and events.

  • Composes content and assists in writing and scheduling videos for media advertisements, including radio, television and social media.

  • Assists with providing content and posting copy on webpages.

  • Assists Senior Director in writing speeches, letters, and other communications.

  • Performs related duties and other special projects as assigned.

  • Serves as an alert administrator for the emergency alert system.

KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED BY THE POSITION
  • Knowledge of public relations and marketing principles.

  • Knowledge of advertising principles.

  • Knowledge of the Associated Press style guide.

  • Knowledge of computers and job-related software programs.

  • Knowledge of college policies and procedures.

  • Skill in decision making and problem solving.

  • Skill in interpersonal relations and in dealing with the public.

  • Skill in oral and written communication.

  • Skill in working effectively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community, as well as providing quality customer service.

SUPERVISORY CONTROLS
The Senior Director of Public Relations and Marketing assigns work in terms of very general instructions. The supervisor spot-checks completed work for compliance with procedures and the nature and propriety of the final results.
GUIDELINES
Guidelines include the Associated Press Style Guide, the Communications Crisis Plan, Department of Public Safety guidelines, and department and college policies and procedures. These guidelines require judgment, selection, and interpretation in application.
COMPLEXITY/SCOPE OF WORK
  • The work consists of varied public relations coordination duties. Frequent interruptions contribute to the complexity of the position.

  • The purpose of this position is to coordinate public relations efforts for the college. Success in this position results in efficient and effective marketing and communication regarding college programs and services.

CONTACTS

  • Contacts are typically with co-workers, other college personnel, faculty, staff, students, consultants, reporters, advertising sales representatives, and members of the general public.

  • Contacts are typically to give or exchange information, to resolve problems, to provide services, or to motivate or influence persons.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS/ WORK ENVIRONMENT
  • The work is typically performed while sitting at a desk or table or while intermittently sitting, standing, or stooping. The employee occasionally lifts light and heavy objects, climbs ladders, and distinguishes between shades of color.

  • The work is typically performed in an office.

SUPERVISORY AND MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITY
None.

Qualifications
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • Knowledge and level of competency commonly associated with the completion of a baccalaureate degree in a course of study related to the occupational field.

  • Experience sufficient to thoroughly understand the work of subordinate positions to be able to answer questions and resolve problems, usually associated with one to three years experience or service.
