This is an hourly-paid appointment on a casual contract. Successful applicants will submit timesheets for hours worked and will be required to complete up to 66 hours for the duration of the project.
We require three Research Assistants for open source data collection and media content analysis, linked to BA-funded research at Birkbeck Politics.
Background
‘Exploring citizens' responses to science in public policy’ is a British Academy-funded project based at Birkbeck Politics. We ask how science and scientific evidence can be best communicated to facilitate citizens’ trust and critical engagement with science in contested policy areas. Our case studies cover Clean Air Zones, GM crops, and the monkeypox epidemic.
The Role
The role of the three Research Assistants will be to analyse news stories and debate transcripts related to these policies. The key activities of the Research Assistants will be locating and downloading information from online sources about the stakeholders identified in these texts (such as political and campaign groups, research organisations), organising and storing data, and verifying machine-generated predictions (for example, tone of text).
The Research Assistants will get clear instructions and support from the project team. They will also learn about several aspects of the research itself, including research design, data collection, and analysis.
Skills and experience
This opportunity would build on experience with tasks such as data entry, data collection, and/or specifically media content coding. The ideal applicant will have (a) a high ability to stay focused while carrying out repetitive tasks, and (b) an interest in learning about the project: evidence-based policy in the UK or the case studies themselves.
Remuneration:
Payment is based on an hourly rate depending on length of continuous service with the College (starting rate £19.38 per hour inclusive of pro-rata London Allowance and holiday pay) for hours worked. This hourly rate is based on the starting point of Grade 6 of the College's London Pay Scale
