Job Description


Summary of Position:

We are seeking a highly motivated Horticultural Research Associate. In this role, you will support the development and execution of research projects in our nurseries, greenhouses, and post-harvest production areas. The ideal candidate will be responsible for executing a diversity of R&D trials, ranging from variety selection to growing recipe optimization, conducting experiments, collecting and analyzing data, preparing reports, and presenting findings.


Essential Functions & Responsibilities:

  • Set up and execute research projects related to greenhouse lettuce production.
  • Conduct greenhouse experiments, growing plants in substrates, seeding, transplanting, and harvesting.
  • Manage and execute greenhouse daily activities, including planting, fertilizing, irrigation and harvesting.
  • Taking and recording daily measurements such as plant growth analysis, plant size, plant weights, nutrient deficiencies, and plant stress related to the environment.
  • Maintaining clean environment for plant growth under controlled conditions
  • Prepare and maintain plant materials for chemical and biochemical analysis.
  • Prepare and maintain chemical stock solutions for nutrient cultures.
  • Collaborate with other staff members to collect and analyze data.
  • Participate in data interpretation, analysis, and report writing.
  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date records, protocols, results, and data.
  • Prepare presentations and reports.
  • All other duties as assigned.


Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities:

  • Knowledge of greenhouse operations, experimental design, data collection, and data analysis.
  • Excellent organizational, analytical, planning, and interpersonal skills.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Knowledge in nutrient solution formulations (as a plus), hydroponics, and plant growth analysis measurements.
  • Clear and concise verbal and written communication skills.
  • Self-motivated; ability to work under general supervision and independently.
  • Ability to use Microsoft Office software, especially Excel.
  • Ability to lift and carry equipment and supplies, and work in a greenhouse environment.
  • Traveling to business locations as needed.
  • Willingness to work flexible hours and weekends as needed.

Education and Experience:

  • A Bachelor's degree in horticulture, plant science, biology, or a related field.
  • Minimum 2 years of greenhouse and/or laboratory experience.
  • Experience in greenhouse lettuce production or related field.


Supervisory:

  • This position does not have any supervisory responsibilities.


Work Environment:

Greenhouse, 80%

  • The temperatures in the greenhouse vary depending on the weather outside
  • Climate can range from hot and humid to cold depending on the location and time of year
  • PPE must be worn at all times

Office, 20%

  • Sitting at a desk and/or staring at a computer screen for extended periods of time


Physical Requirements:

  • Constantly ascending or descending ladders, stairs, scaffolding, ramps, poles, and the like.
  • Occasionally moving self in different positions to accomplish tasks in various environments, including tight and confined spaces.
  • Occasionally remaining in a stationary position, often standing or sitting for prolonged periods.
  • Constantly moving about to accomplish tasks or moving from one worksite to another.
  • Occasionally adjusting or moving objects up to 50 pounds in all directions.
  • Constantly repeating motions that may include the wrists, hands, and/or fingers.
