Job description
We have an exciting opportunity for a talented individual interested in climate change mitigation to join the School of Biosciences to investigate the unexamined and unintended consequences of large-scale deployment of land-based CO2 removal (CDR) strategies (reforestation, peatland restoration, bioenergy crops and enhanced rock weathering), and the extent to which these strategies can help the UK meet targets set in their Net Zero commitment. You will join the group led by Dr Maria Val Martin at the University of Sheffield and work under a UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) funded project “The Net-Zero emissions challenge: Quantifying unintended climate feedbacks from large-scale deployment of land-based CDR strategies”.

As a part of the team, you will be also working closely with colleagues at the Leverhulme Centre for Climate Change Mitigation (LC3M) of University of Sheffield, the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR, Colorado, US), UKCEH, the MetOffice and BEIS.

You will be expected to undertake a range of roles, mainly leading the development of a series of land use and land cover scenarios with natural and agricultural systems (reforestation, peatland restoration, enhanced rock weathering and bioenergy crops), following the UK Net Zero commitments. Later, you will use these scenarios within a high-resolution land model and atmospheric chemical transport model to study the indirect atmospheric impacts from the large-scale deployment of such as strategies, and potential implications for air quality, human and vegetation health, and climate.

We’re one of the best not-for-profit organisations to work for in the UK. The University’s Total Reward Package includes a competitive salary, a generous Pension Scheme and annual leave entitlement, as well as access to a range of learning and development courses to support your personal and professional development.

We build teams of people from different heritages and lifestyles from across the world, whose talent and contributions complement each other to greatest effect. We believe diversity in all its forms delivers greater impact through research, teaching and student experience.
