Job Description Summary:
The Medical Assistant is responsible for ensuring efficient flow of participants through the Clinical Translational and Science Unit by assisting with document management, protocol related clinical assessments of research participants, laboratory functions and assisting in tasks related to the operations of the research clinic.

Job Description:
Plan, provide, and document professional medical assistant care for participants in accordance with study protocols, flow sheets, institutional SOPs and scope of practice.
Engage with customers in a professional manner ensuring that customers (participants, study teams, visitors, etc.) are satisfied with services provided.
Assist Principal Investigators, physicians and/or nurses with special procedures and examinations within competency requirements.
Ensure data collected for completed procedures is recorded on appropriate forms and participant research records.
Maintain orderliness and cleanliness of examination rooms; stock assigned areas and monitor levels of supplies.
Check and complete required logs and equipment such as refrigerator logs, eyewash logs, and other required checks.
Prepare and maintain clinical trial research records.
Perform phlebotomy and sample collection, lab processing, handling, and shipping as outlined in study protocols and within KUMC policy.
Perform vital signs, height, weight and ECG's
Ensure all required consent forms are obtained prior to any research activities.
Support and encourage a cooperative work environment
Assist RN staff in conduction of research visits precisely according to protocol.
Perform procedures in strict compliance to the study protocol, Good Clinical Practice (GCP), Standard Operating Procedures (SOP's), and other state and local regulations as applicable

Required Qualifications:
High School Diploma/GED
One or more years of health care experience or clinical research experience in phlebotomy and/or medical assisting.

Required Skills :
BLS Certification
Basic typing and word processing
Lab collection & processing knowledge
Skillful and proficient in phlebotomy
Willing to become IV insertion certified within 90 days of employment
Ability to work flexible shifts primarily M-F, 8-hr days with occasional early shifts or late shifts and weekends.
Excellent bedside manner when dealing with study participants
Ability to problem solve and troubleshoot

Preferred Qualifications:
Graduate of an accredited Medical Assistant Program OR at least one year of Medical Assisting in an ambulatory/outpatient setting OR certification as CCMA or NCRMA
Clinical research experience as a research assistant or medical assistant
IV insertion certified
