Job Summary The Laboratory of Computational Plasma Physics (LCPP) in the Department of Nuclear, Plasma & Radiological Engineering at The Grainger College of Engineering seeks applicants for a part-time Research Scientist. The position works closely with the LCPP Director in the field of 3D computational modeling of Radio-Frequency antennas for Ion Cyclotron Resonance Heating (ICRH) in Nuclear Fusion applications.
The incumbent is responsible for a range of tasks including, but not limited to: (a) development of 3D computational modeling tools and numerical implementation; (b) performing large-scale simulations of wall impurity emission during ICRH operations in realistic 3D geometry; (c) communicating scientific progress through a variety of outlets such as presentations, internal reports, and scientific publications; (d) participating to weekly meetings with collaborators. The incumbent also provides assistance with project management and works closely with LCPP personnel and to meet LCPP technical statement of work.
Duties & Responsibilities
- Conduct research on the evaluation of wall impurity emission during ICRH operations.
- Development of computational modeling tools and numerical implementation.
- Performing large-scale numerical simulation of impurity emission during ICRH operations.
- Communicating scientific advances through presentations, internal reports, and publications.
- Provide assistance with project management and work closely with LCPP personnel and to meet technical statement of work.
- Participating in weekly meetings with external collaborators.
- Other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
- Master of Science degree in Nuclear, Plasma, and Radiological Engineering, or related area.
- Experience working with computational modeling of impurity emission using Particle-in-Cell modeling tool for Ion Cyclotron Resonance Heating (ICRH) operations in Nuclear Fusion.
- 3 or more years of programming experience with Python and C++.
- Ability to troubleshoot software-related issues.
- Ability to formulate innovative solutions for highly-complex multi-physics modeling problems.
- US citizen or lawful permanent resident.
Appointment Information
The Research Scientist position is a 50% full-time equivalent (FTE), six-month, non-tenure track academic position. The appointment duration is subject to change based on funding availability. The expected start date is as soon as possible after 4/6/2023. Applicants may be interviewed before the closing date; however, no hiring decision will be made until after that date. Salary is commensurate with experience and qualifications.
