The University of Alabama at Birmingham is seeking a Researcher II to assist in biological, physiological, and genetic research in Drosophila (Fruit flies) laboratory.

Research in this lab addresses the pathophysiological basis of human circadian/metabolic disorders linked to cardiometabolic disease, myofibrillar-myopathies, proteinopathies neuropathies, sleep, and aging disruptions. We also integrate physiological, cell-molecular, genetics, genomics, and nutritional approaches to understand how lifestyle (including circadian rhythms and eating/sleeping patterns) and genetic factors act to maintain the structural integrity of cells, tissues, and organs that in turn dictates organismal physiology.

The Researcher II position will be involved in setting up genetic crosses and performing physiological and genetic-related assays. The position will also assist graduate students and postdocs with their projects, and training to volunteering undergraduates.


General Responsibilities

Under minimal supervision:

  • To set up and perform routine and established lab procedures in support of lab goals.
  • To collect, enter and summarize data.
  • To monitor results and report unusual outcomes.

Key Duties & Responsibilities

  • Performs routine genetic fly crosses and collects progeny for aging, functional, and behaviors assays.
  • Data collection and analyses under the supervision of the PI/Supervisor in association with Graduate Students and Postdoctoral Fellows.
  • Ordering lab supplies from routine vendors regularly.
  • Making fly food and responsible for maintaining (Drosophila (flies) stocks and stocking reagents, research chemicals, stocking consumable items, routine lab cleaning, and keep up.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Salary Range: $15.50 - $23.51 Hourly


Qualifications

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field
  • OR Associate's degree in a related field and two (2) years of related experience
  • OR High School diploma or GED and four (4) years of related experience

Work experience may NOT substitute for education requirement.
