Job Summary
The Schmidt Academy for Software Engineering is a five-year pilot program that will provide a unique training opportunity for recent undergraduate students with strong software engineering interest to advance discovery. Through their work with the Schmidt Academy, Schmidt Scholars will transform software engineering practices and enable research groups to pursue new scientific and technological advances that would not be feasible otherwise.
Schmidt Scholars will participate in an intensive training "boot camp" in software engineering and will be embedded within a research group for a two-year period, supporting innovative science and facilitating computational approaches across campus. Upon completing the Academy, Schmidt Scholars will have excellent career opportunities both in industry and via graduate school. The boot camp will be run by and the scholars mentored by two Schmidt Academy senior engineers/instructors, who will also interface directly with the Principal Investigators to help develop projects and ensure progress.
Essential Job Duties
- Scholar will work within the Deep Cell Research Group and work remotely.
- Work with an existing Scholar working on the Deep Cell software to understand the functioning of the software, the critical challenges that are currently faced by the research group and the coming software needs of the research group.
- Make changes to the software as needed.
- Review and understand the software testing framework and make changes as needed.
- Review and understand the software documentation as needed.
- Participate remotely in any research group meeting that is required to better understand and advance the software.
- Participate remotely in any Software Academy meetings, including the Thursday stand-up meeting.
Basic Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree expected by June 2023.
- Significant experience in software development through coursework and/or research.

This position is eligible for a remote work option, subject to institutional review and adherence to the Institute's policies.
- An approved remote work agreement is required.
- In accordance with Caltech's remote work guidelines, responsible for having a designated work area (home office) and for any costs related to remodeling and/or the initial setup of such designated workspace.
- Equipment needs for remote work are determined on a case-by-case basis.
- Experience with Zoom and other similar video/web conference software required.
- Report to the office as necessary by operational needs.
