WORK YEAR: 195 Days
DEFINITION:
Under the direction of the site Principal, provide educational and behavioral counseling to individuals and small groups of students, including classroom presentations; assist students in understanding and seeking solutions to social, emotional, and academic problems and issues; serve as a resource pertaining to student behavior management strategies, and welfare and attendance problems and concerns; and other related functions as required.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: The following is a list of duties that is representative of the position that includes but is not limited to:
- Advises students, parents, and guardians for the purpose of providing information on students’ progress and/or recommendations regarding their successful transition from grade to grade
- Provide individual and group guidance counseling to students; confer as needed with parents, teachers, and others regarding student needs including school achievement and behavior
- Identify and counsel a variety of students with special needs including truants, potential dropouts, special education, gifted, academically deficient individuals and students with social or behavioral problems; develop educational goals for students with high risk behavior
- Provide counseling to families to assist students with school and social adjustment problems; conduct home visits as appropriate
- Provide crisis counseling services as needed
- Collaborate with outside agencies, such as police department, sheriff’s office, probation, and welfare departments, mental health agencies and courts, etc., to ensure appropriate supports and interventions are available to students and information provided for the safety and benefit of students.
- Refer students to social service and governmental agencies, support groups, and other community resources as appropriate; consult with law enforcement agencies regarding students as necessary
- Serve as liaison to other agencies, students, school personnel, families, and community organizations; maintain relations between school, the community and community services; respond to inquiries and provide information
- Prepare records and reports related to the assignment; prepare letters to parents, progress reports, referrals and related documents
- Maintain current knowledge of community resources and recent trends in counseling techniques
- Communicate with District personnel, school staff, parents, students and public agencies regarding student placement, referrals, services and related issues
- Counsel parents regarding academic and social concerns of their children; interpreting the school program to parents and helping them understand their child’s abilities, needs, and opportunities
- Prepare and deliver oral presentations as requested
- May chaperone a variety of school events such as games and dances
- Help interpret test results for students and parents
- Support students and parents with information regarding promotion and high school entrance requirements
- Support the SST process
- Assist the principal in planning and conducting training for school staff in such areas as human relations and child growth and development
- Regularly review student records to evaluate student progress
- As a member of the master scheduling team, assist in the gathering and organizing of data needed for the construction of master schedules of classes; complete scheduling of all students; make schedule changes as necessary, and schedule all incoming new students
OTHER DUTIES:
- Attend and participate in a wide variety of meetings, conferences, trainings, and in-services to update skills and keep informed of current practices to meet the needs of students, families, and site
- Perform other related duties as may be assigned by administration in compliance with Board policies and administrative regulations, the Master Contract, and State regulations
PHYSICAL AND MENTAL CHARACTERISTICS
Physical, mental and emotional stamina to perform the duties and responsibilities of the position; manual dexterity sufficient to write, use telephone, business machines; vision sufficient to read printed materials; hearing sufficient to conduct in person and telephone conversations; speaking ability in an understandable voice with sufficient volume to be heard in normal conversational distance, on the telephone and addressing groups; physical agility to push/pull, squat, twist, turn, bend, stoop and to reach overhead; physical mobility sufficient to move about the work environment
(office, district, school site-to-site), drive an automobile, and respond to emergency situations; physical strength sufficient to lift 40 pounds; physical stamina sufficient to sit for prolonged periods of time; mental acuity to collect and interpret data, evaluate, reason, define problems, establish facts, draw valid conclusions, make valid judgments and decisions.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Education and Experience
- Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university
- An appropriate Pupil Personnel Services credential
Knowledge of:
- Effective personal and academic counseling techniques and procedures
- Counseling theory, ethics, and associated legal confidentiality requirements
- Principles, practices, and procedures of educational counseling
- Specific laws regarding minors and child abuse reporting
- Applicable sections of the State Education Code and other applicable laws, rules and regulations
- Section 504 Plan and Individual Education Plan requirements
- Curriculum and promotion requirements
- Normal and abnormal child behavior and development
- Behavior modification techniques and strategies
- Community referral resources
- Diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds of District students
- Record-keeping and report preparation techniques
- Public speaking techniques
Skills and Abilities:
- Stimulate and motivate students to learn
- Establish and maintain cooperative relationships with students, school personnel, parents, co- workers, and the public
- Communicate effectively in the English language both orally and in writing
- Meet schedules and timelines
- Work independently with appropriate direction
- Analyze situations accurately and adopt an effective course of action
- Learn and use technology and computer software applications as appropriate to the work environment
- Use tact, patience, and courtesy when dealing with people
- Use initiative and judgement in discussing problems with the public and district staff, involving office practices and policies
- Understand and be sensitive to those culturally and linguistically diverse background
- Possess a California driver's license and be insurable
Desirable Qualifications:
- Previous successful counseling experience at the K-8 level
- Previous experience working effectively with culturally and linguistically diverse groups
- Ability to speak a language in addition to English
- Knowledge of organization, operations, policies, and objectives of public education
- Strategic and analytical thinking skills and the ability to apply deductive reasoning and draw conclusions in order to solve problems and facilitate decision-making processes
- Ability to continuously seek quality service and process improvements in order to support a mission and strategic vision
Job Type: Full-time
Pay: $60,085.00 - $118,855.00 per year
