General Summary:
Vertex is seeking a motivated and talented individual with experience in nucleic acid process development. This role will help define a manufacturing platform in support of our gene therapy programs. The successful candidate will be responsible for strategizing and developing mRNA production/purification capabilities and/or the Lipid nanoparticle (LNP) formulation processes that meet the needs of our patients and product.
Key Responsibilities:
- Design and execute studies to support the development of a robust and scalable mRNA synthesis process.
- Develop and characterize mRNA purification methods including chromatography, TFF, and other types of bioprocess filtration to support process development activities.
- Design and execute lipid component and formulation screening/optimization studies to develop a scalable LNP formulation process for mRNA delivery.
- Analyze and interpret experimental results and present them at cross-functional meetings.
- Author, review, and refine technical reports.
- Drive development activities working in a cross-functional environment.
- Collaborate within departmental teams, actively contribute to deliverables, and engage in team discussions on issue resolution.
- Understand relevant regulatory expectations and ensure drug substance achieves target safety, stability, and quality profiles.
- Identify and manage external development opportunities and activities.
- Research and utilize trending science to drive innovation and find novel paths to solve difficult problems.
Minimum Requirements:
- PhD. in chemical or biomedical engineering, pharmaceutical sciences, biochemistry, or related discipline with a minimum of 1+ years of industry experience or (MS) with 4+ years of industry experience or (BS) with 6+ years of industry experience.
- Hands-on experience with in vitro transcription and mRNA purification technologies.
- Relevant experience and knowledge in lipid delivery systems, microfluidic-based formulations, and related technologies.
- Knowledge of mRNA and LNP characterization methods.
- Experience with DoE principles and relevant statistical software (JMP) to guide process optimization.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills and ability to manage multiple tasks while meeting timelines and adapting to changing priorities.
- Strong organizational skills, high attention to detail, and ability to work in a collaborative, cross-functional environment.
