Description / Position Overview

PART-TIME - Recreation Assistant II - Deerfield Community Center

In this position, you will assist with the supervision and oversight of out-of-school time break camps and programs at Deerfield Community Center. This position will be instrumental in creating new programs in Southeast Colorado Springs for all ages based on the needs of the community. The Recreation Assistant II will also assist in community-wide special event planning and management.

This is a .75 full-time position with benefits averaging 30 hours per week. Additional hours may be scheduled as needs arise. Regular and predictable attendance is an essential function in the performance of this job.


Essential Job Functions - an employee in this position must maintain the ability to:
  • Assist in the development, implementation, and administration of culturally relevant programs and events for youth and adults in SE Colorado Springs, including out-of-school time break programs
  • Serve as point of contact for out-of-school time programs
  • Serve in conjunction with our partner, RISE, to support the Southeast Youth Advisory Council.
  • Collaborate with community-based organizations to develop and schedule programming and events maximizing Deerfield Park and facility usage
  • Seek proposals from service providers; develop partner programs/contracts; and recruit sponsors to assist in the delivery of events and programs
  • Lead marketing efforts for programs and events; coordinate promotional materials and recognition of partners and sponsors
  • Assist with hiring, supervising, training, and evaluating seasonal program staff
  • Cultivate positive relationships and excellent communication with area residents, community organizations, and partners
  • Attend all required meetings, including RISE Southeast coalition meetings and key stakeholder meetings
  • Prepare correspondence, reports, and analyses of participation; and give presentations to key stakeholders
  • Actively solicit feedback from program/event participants to ensure that program offerings meet desired objectives; make recommendations for program improvements
  • Assist with daily operations of the community center, including marketing, program registration, events, and customer service
We are looking for candidates who demonstrate:
  • Knowledge of age-appropriate programming
  • Ability to maintain awareness of new trends and service delivery in the field of recreation.

  • Ability to utilize good judgment in a variety of settings
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with diverse populations
  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, orally and in writing
  • Exceptional customer service skills

Successful candidates will have

  • A high school diploma or GED supplemented by college-level coursework in recreation, physical education, public health, or a related field
  • One year of full-time recreation program experience
  • Possess, or obtain upon hire, and maintain a valid, non-probationary Colorado driver's license not subject to restriction related to alcohol and/or drug violations or pending charges
  • Possess, or obtain within 30 days of hire, First Aid and CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation) certifications
One (1) year of the appropriate type and level of experience may be substituted for each required year of post-high school education.

Additional appropriate education may be substituted for the minimum experience requirements.

Ideal candidates will also have

  • Possess a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with major coursework in recreation administration, special event management, or a related field
  • Two years of experience in program and events development and implementation, including supervisory responsibilities
  • Be Director qualified in the State of Colorado for School-Age licensed programs

Additional Information

The City of Colorado Springs offers additional compensation depending on the position, area of assignment, and specific job assignments, including shift differential, pay differential, acting or lead, special assignment, hazard pay, longevity, cell phone allowance, uniform allowance, relocation, awards, standby, call out, compensatory time off, tuition, overtime, extra duty, incentive, holiday premium, proficiency, and vacation sell back.

This position requires the ability to lift up to 25 pounds occasionally. The ability to work outdoors in extreme weather conditions is also required.

Work schedule may consist of ten-hour days in the summer and occasional weekend hours.
