Job Description


The Research Systems Administrator is a member of Research Services at Boston College. Research Services provides consultation, research support and training to students, faculty and staff in a variety of domains such as statistics and statistical software, scientific computation, computational mathematics, GIS, surveys and quantitative research. Research Services also offers support with coding, databases, web technologies, and administration for research-oriented computing hardware based within departments and institutes.

The Research Systems Administrator provides value-added Linux server and Windows server administration, with a focus on but not limited to systems in the department of Chemistry and Boston College’s Research Core Facilities. The Research Core Facilities (RCF) are cutting-edge shared resources that offer services in multiple domains including high end instrumentation and education. The Clean Room and Nanofabrication Facility, the Scanning Electron Microscope and Transmission Electron Microscope Facility, the Imaging Facility, and the Mass Spectrometry Center are some of the ten facilities and centers that fall under the umbrella of RCF. The role provides system administration for specialized teaching and research solutions software such as MestreNova, Scilligence ELN, and CPRLocal, used by RCF and the wider research community at Boston College.

The Research Systems Administrator writes scripts to automate various system administration processes and to tie instruments to storage and computation. The role designs, implements and maintains research- and computation-oriented solutions involving virtualization and containerization on BC’s HPC Linux cluster and on cloud services such as AWS and GCP. The role helps promote technologies for teaching and research, and stays abreast of new technologies and their applications.

Responsibilities/Competencies:
  • Provides value added Linux server and Windows server administration services to departments and institutes at Boston College
  • Sets up and maintains virtual machines and containerized research/teaching applications both on BC’s HPC Linux cluster and on cloud services such as AWS and GCP
  • Writes scripts to automate system administration tasks and processes
  • Writes scripts to tie instruments to storage and computation
  • Works with faculty and researchers to understand their current and future needs, and develops solutions to address them
  • Manages specialized teaching and research software
  • Explores and promotes technologies that facilitate teaching and research
  • Develops and delivers training on topics related to research and teaching technologies, scripting and automation
  • Acts as a liaison between researchers and other functional areas within the department
  • Commitment to continuous learning and skill development

Title and salary commensurate with relevant experience based on the following titles and hiring ranges:

Senior Research Systems Administrator (5+ yrs of exp). Salary range from 97k to 121k
Research Systems Administrator (2-5 yrs of exp). Salary range from 84K to 105K


Requirements


Bachelor’s degree in computer science, computational chemistry, physics or a related technical field
Experience in an academic/research environment
Hands-on experience with setting up and managing Linux and Windows servers
Ability to write scripts (for example, to automate system administration tasks and processes, tie instruments to storage and computation)
Knowledge and experience with container technology
Ability to work with faculty and researchers to address their research technology needs
Oriented to innovative approaches to problem solving
Excellent verbal, written (including documenting code) and interpersonal communications skills to include presentation skills and the ability to influence others
