We are looking for someone who can be a part of a highly collaborative team while being able to make independent decisions that align with our company’s Mission, Vision, and Values. The Head Routesetter is responsible for ensuring our product offering meets the diverse needs of our community while also fostering a routesetting culture rooted in wellness, discovery, and the endless pursuit of mastery. The Head Routesetter will work closely with the Assistant Director of Routesetting for the Baltimore District and the Gym Director to coordinate resources of the setting department with the needs of the local gym.

Movement Columbia will require a Head Routesetter that is driven, takes initiative and communicates effectively. The Head Routesetter is expected to play an instrumental role in developing the talent of their local setting team through their own knowledge of the craft, passion for climbing, and connection to the community here and at our Baltimore facilities. They will be responsible for keeping the facility’s rotation on schedule within a given budget and creating workflows for the team to accomplish daily setting goals.

The Head Routesetter plays a key role in driving department projects forward through engaging with leadership and implementing policy and procedures in the day to day. Below is a short-list of some of our department’s current areas of focus that you would likely be involved in:

  • Utilization and adoption of Kaya/Plastick software within our setting program and the community
  • Development of climbing style characteristics applied to all of our product intended to communicate the user experience we are trying to provide
  • Formalizing a setting apprenticeship program that can help onboard new team members and an internship program that can provide aspiring routesetters with growth opportunities
  • Foster growth and connection with our Columbia/Baltimore climbing community

Job Responsibilities

  • Manage the day to day setting operations through leading a team, organizing setting assignments, scheduling, and partnering with the Gym Director and the Assistant Director of Routesetting to make sure route quality, grade distribution, and rotation is keeping up with current trends of our member’s needs and requests
  • Help recruit, hire, and train routesetters on a rolling basis. This may include developing apprenticeship and/or mentorship opportunities locally and supporting team members through formal performance reviews.
  • Routine upkeep of routesetting software, setting equipment, facility setting budget, and time-off requests
  • Play an active role in engaging with our community members and being an ambassador of the craft

Job Qualifications:

  • Extensive setting and climbing experience in a commercial climbing facility
  • Highly adaptable and able to navigate a dynamic, fast paced environment in a growing industry
  • Proficient in organizational tools such as web-based applications and MS Office suite
  • Proven leadership experience and refined organizational skills. The Head Routesetter needs to be able to manage multiple tasks and competing priorities.
  • Refined understanding of fundamental climbing movement and the ability to break down complexities of what contributes to the difficulty of a climb while developing/mentoring their team.
  • Ability to test and evaluate the accessibility, quality, and difficulty of climbs across a wide variety of styles. The ability to climb V8 and 5.12+ in multiple styles is preferred, but not required with the appropriate skillset.
  • Be able to provide and receive constructive criticism in an effective manner, thrive in a team environment and work well with others within the setting team and across departments.
  • Executes all tasks and responsibilities with a level of professionalism that sets an example for the rest of the industry to follow
  • Candidate should be creative, with an eye for detail, and should be able to express themselves within a structured system.

Additional Details

This is a full-time, hourly position

Compensation for this role starts at $29.00/hour, commensurate with experience

This role is based in Maryland – applicants will be assigned a primary location but must be available to work at all regional locations
