Job Description: On-Call Crisis Hotline & Shelter Advocate
Reports To: Shelter Services Manager
Exempt/Non-Exempt Status: Non-Exempt, Part-Time, On-Call
SALARY RANGE: $15 – 20/hour, depending on experience. Scheduled for 10-30 hours a week, depending on the needs of the agency.
BACKGROUND: Established in 1992, Safer Path Family Violence Shelter is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization serving survivors of family and sexual violence. Safer Path builds awareness of family violence and sexual assault, empowers victims, supports survivors’ healing, and creates a safe and abuse free community. PURPOSE: The function of the On-Call Crisis Hotline & Shelter Advocate is to provide coverage for our shelter and our 24/7 crisis hotline. This position will be regularly scheduled for a minimum of 10 hours each week, currently on Sundays. We need an individual with a flexible schedule to provide shelter and hotline coverage during PTO, call-outs, meetings, and trainings throughout the week. This position is responsible for providing crisis intervention and other social services to individuals in crisis housed temporarily in an emergency domestic violence shelter. This part-time on-call position is shiftwork based and provides 24-hour coverage, 365 days a year. Shifts may include day shift, night shift, and weekend swing shift. Primary responsibilities include: maintaining a safe and secure facility, answering the 24-hour hotline, entering data into the client database, and performing light maintenance/housekeeping. This position frequently functions independently for facility coverage and has responsibility for taking appropriate action in crisis situations per agency procedure. This is a challenging position that requires a commitment to the safety of clients in shelter, and a flexible schedule to accommodate coverage needs. This person must be committed to providing a high standard of care, confidentiality, integrity, and ethics. The ideal candidate will be skilled in working with sensitive issues and committed to respecting the confidential nature of this program, will have a strong commitment to the mission and values of Safer Path, be highly stress tolerant, and able to maintain their composure in stressful or adverse situations. Must have a high school diploma. Bilingual (Spanish) preferred. Must provide own transportation; possess a valid Texas driver’s license, proof of auto insurance and a positive driving record. Must be able to pass a background check – required for employment.

Duties & Responsibilities include, but may not be limited to the following:
- Emergency Shelter Provider: The Residential Specialist works in a residential facility for battered women and their children. Primary duties include:
- Maintaining a safe and secure facility
- Responding to requests from residents
- Understanding and following emergency procedures, including fire procedures
- Distributing household supplies
- Keeping activity logs
- Provide crisis intervention and mediate between residents when necessary
- Provide childcare to client children as needed
- Provide supportive counseling to residents
- Answer and manage hotline
- Data entry into the client database
- Maintain progress notes for each resident, documenting assistance provided
- Perform light maintenance/housekeeping responsibilities
- Assist in providing security coverage including building rounds; distribute room keys to residents and maintain log of visitors entering and exiting the premises
- Function independently in times of facility coverage including responsibility for appropriate action in crisis situations per agency procedure and make necessary phone calls as needed.
- Meet with Shift Supervisor for individual and group supervision.
- Other related tasks as assigned
- Organizational Operations: Works with all staff to ensure the achievement of the mission.
- Demonstrate professional conduct at all times
- Input all calls into Osnium Database
- Assist with facilities upkeep, cleanliness, and maintenance as needed.
- Clerical and administrative duties may include answering business calls, knowledge of and experience with copy machines, faxes, computers, printers, etc.; statistical data entry and other similar tasks and duties as assigned.
- Performs other duties as assigned to effectively conduct the Agency’s business.
Qualifications:
- A strong commitment to the mission and values of AFCC.
- High school diploma
- Two years’ experience working in residential facilities or relevant experience.
- Bilingual (Spanish) strongly preferred
- Skilled in working with sensitive issues and commitment to respecting the confidential nature of the programs. Knowledge regarding sexual assault and domestic violence preferred.
- Participate training seminars conducted to enhance and develop one’s skills.
- Must be computer-literate and must have knowledge of Microsoft Office applications.
- This position will have regular and substantial contact with children. Be organized and follow through on tasks and goals.
- Display a positive attitude, show concern for people and community, demonstrate presence, self-confidence, common sense, and good listening ability.
- Ability to walk, bend, stoop, twist at waist, reach, climb stairs, lift and carry at least 25 lbs.
- Proven ability to work effectively with diverse staff, clients and volunteers as well as work comfortably as a team member and contribute positively to workplace.
- Experience in a crisis setting and able to respond appropriately to emergencies, including contacting appropriate staff and/or contacting and interacting with police, fire, and medical personnel as needed.
- CPR and First Aid certification required within first three months of hire.
- TB (Tuberculosis) clearance and documentation required post-offer.
- Provide own transportation; possess a valid Texas driver’s license, proof of auto
insurance and a positive driving record
- Ability to pass a background check – required for employment.
