General Purpose of Job:

The school nurse will work to eliminate or minimize any health problem that may interfere with a student’s ability to learn. Prevention of illness, assisting with disability, early detection and correction of health problems will be a major focus of school nursing services

Essential Duties:

This job description is intended to cover the minimum essential duties assigned on a regular basis. Caregivers may be asked to perform additional duties as assigned by their leader. Leadership has the right to alter or modify the duties of the position.

• Promote and protect the optimal health status of students.
• Acts as a liaison between home and school regarding health concerns.
• Develops and implements a health plan.
• Interprets the health status of students and school personnel
• Initiates referrals to parents, school personnel and community resources for intervention, remedy and follow through.
• Provides ongoing health counseling with students, parents, school personnel and health agencies.
• Recommends and helps to implement modification of school programs to meet student’s health needs.
• Utilizes existing health resources to provide appropriate care of students.
• Support families and individual students to ensure that the McKinney Vento Act is available in times of need.
• Maintains, evaluates and interprets cumulative health data to accommodate individual needs of students.
• Implements school health protocols for the student with chronic health problems, including the administration of medications.
• Provides for crisis intervention for acute illness and injuries, including emergency first aid.
• Promotes and assists in the control of communicable diseases through preventative immunization programs, early detection, surveillance, reporting communicable diseases and exclusion of student when indicated.
• Assists in sending notification sheets home with students in a classroom where a communicable disease has been reported.
• Identifies environmental health and safety hazards including recommendations for prevention programs.
• Provides health education and health counseling to assist students and families in making decision on health and lifestyles that affect health.
• Participates in health education directly and indirectly by teaching persons to become more assertive health consumer and to assume greater responsibility for their own health.
• Acts as a resource for faculty and staff.
• Conducts health related classroom presentations.
• Provides outreach and medical liaison between the school, the student, family and community health care providers.
• Provides health counseling for staff.
• Assists in the formation of health policies, goals and objectives for the school district.
• Document medical information and reports sent to staff when needed.
• Other duties as assigned.
