Preference will be given to candidates who are also willing to continue working in the Conservatory Library Stacks Team for 4-6 hours/week during the fall and spring semesters.

During the summer, student may schedule up to two weeks off for vacation, subject to supervisors’ approval. Student will work Monday through Friday, 9am-12pm, and 1pm-4:30pm in June, and the same hours from Monday through Thursday in July, at the Conservatory Library for a maximum total of 32.5 hours/week.

Applicants MUST be a currently enrolled Oberlin College or Conservatory student to qualify for summer work.

As a Conservatory Library Stacks Assistant, you ensure that the Conservatory Library remains accessible and organized. With a keen and unerring eye for detail, you will reshelve returned materials, find and report on inaccuracies in the Conservatory Library collection, and engage in long-term projects that enhance the beauty and functionality of the Library’s holdings. You may also be tasked with pulling and processing materials to be lent to our institutional partners across the globe.

Over the course of training with library staff, you will become fluent in using both Library of Congress and Dewey Decimal classification systems, and learn the fine points of physically navigating the collection. You will use this knowledge to return, reshelve, locate, re-order, search for, and retrieve materials as needed.

Training may be available upon hiring during the Spring 2023 semester, but can also be postponed until the beginning of the Summer Break.

Special Summer Projects/Responsibilities:
  • Shifting LC Book collection – moving the collection to allow more space per shelf throughout the library.
  • Shifting LC Scores collection – moving sections of the collection to allow more space per shelf throughout the library, create space for overflow interfiling, rearranging shelves for weight redistribution throughout ranges.
  • Continue Dewey/LC Score inventory – using the CChan inventory program, track/document the existence of each item on the shelf to keep our database as accurate as possible.
  • INN-Reach responsibilities – paging for OhioLINK, ILL and local holds requests.

Responsibilities
  • Maintain the good working order of the Conservatory Library collection by accurately reshelving returned materials and engaging in stacks-related projects.
  • Page and process offsite requests for Conservatory Library materials through OhioLINK and InterLibrary Loan services
  • Keep up-to-date on Conservatory Library policies and instruction in the form of staff training, audio/visual information sources, and online/local documentation
  • Other duties as assigned (collection inventory, collection shifting, rebarcoding, etc.)

Qualifications
  • Must be a current or incoming Oberlin College or Conservatory student.
  • Must be extremely attentive to detail, receptive to library communications, and able to work independently with limited direct oversight.
  • (desirable but not required) Work Study award.


Physical Requirements:
Work performed is physical in nature and requires sufficient strength, mobility and stamina to:
  • constantly stand and walk throughout a multi-level library facility;
  • frequently crouch, squat, bend, and twist to shelve books from floor level to above head;
  • frequently climb and balance on step-stools or ladders
  • acuity to read computer screens, and book and shelving labels;
  • lift of up to forty (40) pounds from ground to waist; or to lift up to twenty (20) pounds from ground to overhead to return books to stacks and stock supplies and materials; occasional carrying of up to forty (40) pounds 200 feet to move books and material; occasional pushing and/or pulling of up to 150 pounds up to 200 feet with book-truck throughout multi-level public use library.
  • Stacks Work in the Conservatory Library also requires the courage to use an elevator, and the ability to stand in a relatively confined walkway, between shelves, of approximately thirty-two (32) inches on our narrowest sections. Newer sections allow for more space, but old sections have been grandfathered in and will likely (and unfortunately) not be updated for accessibility any time soon.

WORKING CONDITIONS
Work is constantly performed indoors in an air-conditioned and heated academic library setting. This position involves high public contact and mobility through a multi-level use facility.
Required Materials and Equipment (Provided)
Telephone, computer terminals, library software, inventory software, barcode readers, photocopier, book security system equipment, book trucks, and step-stools.


Compensation
$10.10/hour, plus summer incentive ($.90 per hour) if currently employed by the Oberlin College Libraries.
