SUMMARY


The Director of Staff Development Coordinator is responsible for providing orientation, skills development and Inservice programs for all personnel,


The Director of Staff Development coordinates the general orientation of all personnel and mandatory Inservice requirements, maintains all employees health records, Education Files and provides vaccines, TB tests/screens as needed; meets policy requirements in the event of any exposure to bloodborne pathogens.


DELEGATION OF AUTHORITY


As the Director of Staff Development, you are delegated the responsibility and accountability necessary for carrying out your assigned duties.


ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: RESPONSIBILITIES AND STANDARDS


  • Achieves Fairhaven’s educational objectives

By

Understanding and interpreting laws and regulations which influence the practice of medicine and nursing in long term care; participating in defining and refining standards of nursing practice; contributing to the development and revision of philosophy, objectives, policies, procedures for the Department of Nursing and Staff Development; analyze the effectiveness of policies, procedures, and standard of practice, making recommendations for revision as necessary.


  • Communicates effectively within the organizational structure

By

Fostering and maintaining good interpersonal relationships, intra- and interdepartmentally; channeling pertinent information concerning educational needs of staff and other educational activities to the Director of Nurses or appropriate Department Head; developing and distributing a monthly calendar for nursing and other departments, listing all educational activities; promoting effective exchange of information within the facility intra- and interdepartmentally to advance and expand educational activities for nursing and other departments; conferring with Nursing Supervisors and Charge Nurses to discuss nursing care problems and educational programs needed for staff members; providing opportunities for exchange of ideas and questions during orientation and continuing education programs for staff; developing, maintaining and utilizing records, reports, and evaluative data pertinent to staff development and nursing education; maintaining open communication with the Administrator in order to increase the effectiveness of the Department of Staff Development.


  • Plans and implements the general orientation program for Fairhaven

By

Developing the general orientation program and scheduling participants; utilizing audiovisual equipment so that program content is readily available outside of the scheduled time given; collaborating with other disciplines in carrying out the program for all staff; developing evaluative tools for analyzing and revising the general orientation as needed.


  • Plans and implements the specific orientation program for all nursing personnel

By

Determining the educative needs of orienting nursing personnel; preparing new nursing staff members to adjust to Fairhaven, through the orientation program; reviewing educational background and work history of each nursing orientee with the Director of Nurses; developing the course outline, content, testing and evaluative tools for the nursing orientation program; providing classroom structured didactic teaching and the clinical instruction on the nursing unit; identifying individual and group learning needs through the conference and feedback from orienteers.


  • Addresses the educational needs of all nursing personnel

By

Meeting periodically with Supervisors and Charge Nurses to identify educational needs of nursing staff members; conferring with the Director of Nurses and Supervisors to evaluate effectiveness of orientation and educational programs; observing nursing staff members directly to determine how behavioral expectations from classes and courses are implemented; initiating and analyzing surveys of learning needs and develops courses and programs from same.


  • Plan and implements all educational programs

By

Encouraging nursing personnel to assist in the development of educational programs, utilizing their ideas and methods of instruction toward improvement of resident care; instructing the formal programs utilizing a variety of teaching methods dependent upon the structure level, needs of the group and content being taught; utilizing appropriate multimedia variations for instructional purposes.


  • Maintains educational library and audiovisual equipment and resources for the Staff Development Office and Nursing

By

Keeping abreast of current resource materials in nursing and education; maintaining reference material and resources for nursing and education; developing and maintaining systems for the utilization of resource materials.


  • Coordinate the utilization of Fairhaven as a clinical facility with affiliating schools

By

Providing orientation and education for instructions for policies, procedures and routines that will affect their instruction of students; scheduling the utilization of classrooms for affiliating agencies for educational activities, conferring with agency instructors to discuss problems relating to students’ experience in clinical areas.


  • Maintains flexibility of responsibilities and accepts other assignments as delegated

By

Reviewing regulations for required inservice programs for long term care facilities; contacting the appropriate resource people and arrange for programs to be conducted; sending memos and evaluating attendance for all programs; evaluating the effectiveness of all programs; maintaining inservice records.


  • Monitors Infection Control throughout the facility

By

Performing quarterly surveillance rounds throughout the facility; conducting onsite inservices when appropriate; monitoring infection control surveillance records; collecting and performing cross reference of infection monitoring sheets from nursing units with monthly reports from the laboratory; distributing monthly reports to nursing supervisors.


  • Maintains staff health records.

By

Obtaining completed staff physical examination forms; conducting yearly Mantoux tuberculosis testing for all employees; providing vaccines, i.e. Hep B, influenza, etc. for employees per Health Policy; meeting requirements of exposure to Bloodborne Pathogens Policy.


  • Maintains Workman’s Compensation Records and OSHA 200 Log

By

Collecting employee incident reports and keeping required records; communicating effectively with insurance company; assessing need for training in safety.


  • Conserves resources

By

Using equipment and supplies as needed to accomplish tasks; reviews and analyzes needs to obtain appropriate resources to complete tasks.


  • Contributes to team effort

By

Accomplishing related results as needed; providing instruction in areas of expertise to other team members when necessary as part of the on-going educational process.


  • Prepares work to be accomplished

By

Gathering, sorting, and prioritizing documents and related information; provides direction and instructions to personnel when and where appropriate to complete tasks as needed.


  • Keeps equipment operational

By

Following manufacturer’s instructions and established procedures; orders and maintains stock of equipment and supplies; monitors equipment to ensure safety and proper operations.


17. Safety is monitored and ensured

By

Demonstrating, monitoring, and educating staff regarding safety rules, safe work practices, proper material handling and emergency procedures; enforcing Fairhaven disciplinary

system for staff who break or disregard safety rules, safe work practices, proper material handling

and emergency procedures.


QUALIFICATIONS


EDUCATION


Preferred Baccalaureate Degree in nursing from an approved nursing college

Current Massachusetts RN license


EXPERIENCE


Five years or greater experience in nursing and have demonstrated leadership ability.
