Temple Health/Fox Chase Cancer Center

Job Information

  • Job Status: Full-time (40hrs/wk)
  • Job Schedule: Day Shift (9A-5:30P)

Job Summary

  • Performs medical mammograms in order to diagnose disease or trauma.
  • Responsible for programming the machine for correct density, contrast, definition, magnification and distortion.
  • Prepares, maintains and operates mammography equipment in a safe and responsible manner, following appropriate radiation safety guidelines.
  • Performs and documents all QA/QC tests as defined by MQSA.
  • Required to work Mobile Mammography Van when needed, including some weekends. (All requirements & responsibilities apply when assigned to van)

Education

  • High School Diploma or Equivalent (Required)
  • Non Degree Program: Graduate from a two-year AMA approved radiologic technology program (Required)

Licenses and Certifications

  • RT(R)(M) - Registered Technologist (R) (M) (Required)
  • ARRT - American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (Required)
  • MQSA - Mammography Quality Standards Act (Required)
  • BLS - Basic Life Support (Required)

Experience

  • 2 Years experience in a Radiologic Technologist position (Required)
  • 1 Year experience in Mammography (Required)

General Responsibilities

Job Responsibilities

Mammography Procedures

  • Assists the Radiologists' in the performance of image-guided invasive and non-invasive breast procedures.
  • Performs both diagnostic and screening breast Mammogram exams and consults with physicians regarding results.
  • Performs all stereotactic wire localizations and biopsies to include the evaluation of prior imaging reports.
  • Uses RIS/ITS/PACS for the purpose of placing orders, merging images, editing reports and resolving QA issues.
  • Performs and documents patient assessment/history related procedures and provides patient care to meet patient's physical and psychological needs.
  • Matches correct images with appropriate requisition.

Support Services

  • Demonstrates ability to document and track patients through the MRS system.
  • Performs outcome analysis (when assigned).
  • Matches correct images with appropriate requisition.
  • Contact patients who require return visits.
  • Order supplies (when assigned).

Equipment Use

  • Demonstrates location and use of circuit breakers, main power, manual and anatomic programming functions. Utilizes proper phototiming cells, and proper usage of densitometer.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of compression device.
  • Demonstrates ability to perform all required functions in HIS/RIS/MRS including maintaining security/confidentiality of HIS/RIS information, obtaining patient demographics, and tracking patients.
  • Adapts procedure technique and approach to patient according to differences in functional ability.

Daily Procedures

  • Employs learned techniques and applies them for purpose of producing high quality images of breast anatomy.
  • Reviews mammography films that are produced to determine diagnostic quality is satisfactory for interpretation, and that images meet ACR/MQSA requirements. Compares to previous exams when available.
  • Explains procedures and importance of compression to patient.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of mammography procedures for age specific populations (adult and geriatric).
  • Locates and utilizes proper markers (if equipment dictates) and technique charts.
  • Maintains order, cleanliness, and inventory of adequate supplies in mammography rooms. Utilizes proper disinfectants after each procedure, and ensures an adequate inventory of supplies.

Patient Customer Service

  • Maintains excellent public relations with patients, families, physicians, and hospital staff.
  • Addresses issues or potential issues involving customer service and identifies process improvement opportunities.
  • Ensures that patients, their families, visitors, customers and staff members are treated with kindness and respect.
  • Collaborates with Hospital personnel to ensure optimal patient care and promote a positive working environment in unit and Hospital.

Patient Safety

  • Verifies patient identification before performing any procedure. This includes verifying a patient's identity on their ID bracelet, and asking patient to provide name and DOB.
  • Obtains necessary history and evaluation prior to procedure being performed, including LMP on female patients as appropriate.
  • Assess geriatric patients for fall risk and need for additional safety measure.
  • Provides proper protection and shields for patients of child-bearing age and self during examinations. Wears radiation badge according to departmental policy.
  • Maintains privacy, and closes door during exposures. Follows proper sterile technique when required.
