Position: Staff Pharmacist PRN

Reports to: Pharmacy Director

Assists: All Pharmacy personnel including Pharmacy Director, pharmacy technicians, pharmacy check out personnel, and Medication Assistance Program staff

Schedule: PRN; Shifts to be determined by the Pharmacy Director based on Pharmacy needs.

Job Summary:

The primary purpose of this position is to ensure the safe and effective use of medications by dispensing prescribed medications and pharmaceuticals and by providing clinical pharmaceutical care to Center and community patients according to professional standards and state and federal legal requirements. The Pharmacist acts as support personnel for the center?s Pharmacy Director. The Pharmacist must maintain open communication with pharmacy staff and members of the center?s staff. A positive, professional demeanor must be projected through verbal and non-verbal communications. Since this position is often demanding, the Pharmacist should be able to remain calm and produce exceptionally accurate work under pressure. The quality of his or her workmanship greatly influences efficient operations and the patient?s perception of the professionalism and competency of the pharmacy. Must demonstrate a sincere dedication and loyalty to the mission, vision and core values of BRMC.

Specific Responsibilities:

  • Perform all aspects of filling and checking prescriptions.
  • When alerted by a Pharmacy Technician or directly by the pharmacy software, advise technicians, physicians and patients of potential problems to help insure that medications are taken correctly and adverse medication reactions are less likely to occur.
  • Participate in resolving any medication therapy problems including therapeutic duplications, medication allergies, clinically significant drug-drug, drug-disease, drug-nutrient, or drug-laboratory test interactions.
  • Provide concise, applicable, comprehensive, and timely responses to requests for drug information from patients and health care providers.
  • Provide medication teaching upon request.
  • Administer immunizations based on collaborative practice agreement.
  • Be familiar with and follow the policies and procedures of Blue Ridge Medical Center and Blue Ridge Medical Center Pharmacy.
  • Supervise and assist pharmacy personnel and assign duties in the absence of the Pharmacy Director.
  • Personally assist customers or direct them, as appropriate, to other staff members.
  • Is vigilant in the performance of duties and attention to accuracy and detail, to help minimize medication error.
  • Supervise the proper filing of pharmacy records in proper chronological order.
  • Responsible for receipt of controlled medications into pharmacy software. Assist in entry of purchases and prescriptions dispensed in the perpetual inventory spreadsheet, assisting in reconciliation as necessary.
  • Participates in pharmacy activities and makes suggestions to improve pharmacy services and operation as needed.
  • Maintain a positive, professional appearance and attitude in dealing with Center staff and patients.
