Job description

FUNCTION: Responsible for providing health services to facilitate the students optimal physical, mental, emotional and social growth and development. To provide the fullest educational opportunity for each student by minimizing absences due to illness and maximizing in-class time. To create a climate of health and well-being in all schools. The Certified School Nurse/Teacher is directly responsible to the School Principal and the Director of Special Education.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES: 1. According to the Standards of School Nursing Practice, administers nursing care under the guidelines of the Districts policies and procedures and follows medical orders provided by medical director. 2. Works with the School Principal, director of Special Education, classroom teachers, and administrators in developing the school health program.

3. Conducts school programs of immunizations, physical examinations, and screenings as directed by the RI Department of Health and RI Department of Education. 4. Observes students on a regular basis to detect health needs and provides treatments as per standards and protocols using the Nursing Process.

5. Participates in the implementation and evaluation of student care. 6. Participates in the work of health committees as needed..

7. Maintains up-to-date confidential cumulative health records on each student using the Skyward system. 8. Refers and consults with parents, school personnel, physicians, clinics and other community agencies on student health matters, according to HIPAA guidelines, to promote the health and education of a student.

9. Visits students homes when necessary. 10. Assumes authority for the care of a student or a staff member who has suffered an injury or emergency illness.

11. Administers first aid in accordance with established first aid procedures. 12. Develops and implements individual health plans, 504 plans, and participates in the IEP process as appropriate.

13. Participates in Health education directly and indirectly for the improvement of health by teaching persons to become more informed health consumers and to assume greater responsibility for their own health. 14. Implements policy on exclusion and readmission of students in connection with infectious and contagious diseases and immunizations.

15. Participates in in-service programs and maintains current knowledge in the nursing field. 16. Assists school personnel in maintaining sanitary standards in schools.

17. Provides age appropriate health counseling with the goal of responsible decision making. 18. Serves as a resource person to school staff members in health instruction.

19. Coordinates school and community health activities and serves as a liaison health professional between the home, school and community. 20. Provides population based health services for nonpublic schools in the community as per assignment.

21. Follows the policies of the Woonsocket School Department. 22. Maintains school nurse web site with the assistance of the Technology Department.

23. Assumes other general related responsibilities as may be assigned.
