Job Summary - Systems Architect II
Evaluates, designs, secures, plans, documents, and works with a team to deploy new technologies for CSX. Evaluates and integrates Radio technologies across CSX properties and systems to meet operational needs. Works with key vendors and other railroads to establish technology roadmaps for key technologies. Coordinates radio operations to avoid interference with other railroads and industries while ensuring radio availability for CSX.
Primary Activities and Responsibilities
- Evaluate new technological directions in radios and radio protocols to keep CSX systems are highly available and efficient
- Coordinates with key suppliers, other freight railroads and transit authorities to ensure viability of radio systems and avoid interference.
- Partners with internal groups to create CSX vision for radio platforms and to coordinate design, test and implementation of new radio networks.
- Ensures that CSX is adhering to FCC and other regulatory expectations with regard to radio systems and usage.
- Tracks overall radio industry for new technologies and trends to keep radio technology roadmap updated and useful.
- Work directly with FCC as needed to address licensing, purchase, waivers and rule changes.
- Assist other freight railroads and transit authorities as needed and as useful to CSX to ensure radio networks are protected and effective.
- Participate and lead industry work groups as needed.
- Provide expert third level support for areas of expertise
- Perform TCO and ROI analysis on new and existing infrastructure components
- Work directly with hardware and software vendors
- Miscellaneous activities and responsibilities as assigned by manager
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor's Degree/4-year Degree
- 5 or more years of experience in radio technologies and implementation
- 5 or more years of experience in railroad industry
Knowledge and Skills
- Strong working knowledge of radio technologies and operating protocols
- Strong working knowledge of radio frequency propagation, and channel and slot planning
- Strong working knowledge of railroad operations
- Knowledge of TCP/IP, DNS, WINS, BIND and other IP protocols and tools pertinent to specialization
- Knowledge of network architectures, network security design criteria, and how this can impact infrastructure
- Knowledge of IoT systems, IoT management platforms, or Edge computing platforms.
Job Requirements
- Hours which include rotating on-call responsibilities which may be outside standard hours
- Work hours may vary in length and schedule (may include a non-standard work week)
- Considerable travel may be required (up to 50%) depending on circumstances
