Responsibilities
GENERAL PURPOSE:
Provide technical and day-to-day lab support to faculty engaged in teaching and research. The candidate will be involved in activities in the teaching labs and will help organize, guide, and trouble-shoot student projects that feature varying degrees of complexity. The role requires a multi-disciplinary approach and will include work with design, development, fabrication, utilization, and testing of specialized equipment. Candidate should be conversant and have some familiarity with mechanical lab instrumentation including but not limited to strain gauges, pressure transducers, load cells, LVDTs, RVDTs, extensometers, thermocouples, accelerometers, high-speed video, and various other electronic measuring systems. In addition the candidate should have some familiarity with general mechanical test methods including work on universal test machines. Experience with ovens, motors, pumps, small wind-tunnels or flumes would also be helpful. Knowledge of basic benchtop electronics and data acquisition is required. LabVIEW and MATLAB experience desired.
SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Provide technical and day-to-day lab support to faculty engaged in teaching. The candidate will be involved in activities in the teaching labs and will help organize, guide, and trouble-shoot projects that feature varying degrees of complexity. Serve as a mentor and assist a variety of student teams in project development, instrumentation, assembly, testing, and data acquisition.
- Develop, program, maintain, and calibrate mechanical lab instrumentation including but not limited to: strain gauges, pressure transducers, load cells, LVDTs, RVDTs, extensometers, thermocouples, accelerometers, high-speed video, and various other electronic measuring systems. Develop and code mechanical test applications and instruments using LabVIEW, MATLAB and related test software.
- Support safety standards, procedures and daily operations of labs. This is done via the proper operation and handling of equipment, materials, and chemicals in a variety of labs.
- Support faculty with lab research. Tasks may include developing and deploying mechanical or electrical systems used as part of critical experiments.
- Provide support to student organizations such as Solar Splash and Baja. Provide support to summer STEM programs.
REQUIREMENTS:
- BS in Mechanical Engineering or Mechanical Engineering Technology with 1 - 3 years of experience working in an R&D-type lab environment or equivalent experience/education required.
- Must be able to work independently on design, assembly, and testing of mechanical and electro-mechanical systems required.
- Must have practical hands-on skills and be comfortable working on a variety of projects in a laboratory setting required.
- Must possess basic mechanical and electrical skills for prototype systems required.
- Computer skills in CAD, LabVIEW, MATLAB, and other design, testing, or analysis software are highly desirable preferred.
- Experience with basic 3-D Printing desirable.
