What you will do:
The Equine and Nemo Farm Animal Hospital (ENFAH) is seeking a 6-month temporary Animal Attendants to work with faculty clinicians, Licensed Veterinary Technicians (LVTs), Interns, and Residents, as well as other staff throughout the hospital, providing optimal patient care for our clients/owners.
Specifically, the Animal Attendants will:
- Perform large animal care and handling, as well as washing and disinfecting all areas in the ENFAH, including stalls, treatment rooms, breezeway, etc., as well as disinfecting any equipment associated with milking or other animal care-related tasks.
- Provide general care to patients, such as feeding, water, grooming, picking hooves, and bathing, as needed, as well as bed stalls.
- Removal of biohazardous waste, including transportation of deceased animals to proper disposal areas, ensuring strict adherence to hospital infection control policies.
- Assist with the loading/unloading of animals, as needed, as well as assist in their transportation to treatment areas for procedures.
- Operate machinery, including forklifts, tractors, etc., to assist with moving pallets, boxes, dumpsters, etc.
- Must develop and maintain excellent working relationships, including communicating with staff, students, technicians, veterinarians, and clients in a professional manner at all times.
The Cornell University Hospital for Animals provides 24-hour care for pets 365 days a year. The schedule for this position requires flexibility to ensure that adequate patient care and service needs are provided without interruption or exception. The schedule will include day, evening, weekend, and/or holiday shifts.
What are the qualifications?
- High School diploma and at least a year of experience, specifically with large animal handling experience (horses, cows, pigs, alpacas, sheep) and/or animal husbandry in a hospital/clinical setting or equivalent combination of education and experience required.
- Candidate must have the ability to meet the physical demands of the position, which includes, but is not limited to, prolonged standing and kneeling, as well as lifting and restraining large animals, as well as ability to jog horses multiple times daily;
- Must demonstrate a high level of initiative; have excellent communication and organizational skills and the ability to multi-task;
- Rabies pre-exposure vaccinations and titer are required, and the cost will be covered by the department.
