Summary of Work
At the North Dakota Department of Transportation (NDDOT), we owe our success to our Team and processes. As a Transportation Project Manager in our Materials and Research Division, you will find, secure, sample, test, document, and advertise aggregate sources for specific road construction projects so that all contractors will have a source to use for bidding and processing of materials. You will be responsible for maintaining files and databases of aggregate pit information for future use and report information when needed. Overnight travel is required for this position.
This position will work with other sections, divisions, contractors, landowners, aggregate owners, general public and answer questions and address problems concerning aggregate sources and material. You will also manage state-owned aggregate pits. The ideal person for this position will be a problem solver with excellent communication skills and attention to detail with previous experience in highway and transportation construction.
Primary duties associated with this position are as follows:
- Gravel Prospecting is performed to locate and secure gravel sources that can be utilized on DOT construction projects:
- Supervise and perform drilling operations using a truck-mounted drilling rig to obtain aggregate samples for analysis.
- Operate equipment including a truck-mounted drilling rig, skid steer loader, and pickup.
- Test and classify aggregate samples taken from the drilling operation, survey test locations, and plot results.
- Use maps and GIS applications to determine possible aggregate locations.
- Prospect for gravel sources and obtain permission from property owners for exploration and sale of aggregates.
- Check property ownership and mineral rights and call-in utility locates for drilling locations.
- Conduct on-site safety meetings with gravel prospecting field crew.
- Enter pit information for State Tax Commissioner survey and compile annual reports for aggregate royalties.
- Equipment Maintenance and Welding:
- Maintain equipment on a regular basis and keep updated records.
- Clean equipment and winterize and paint at the end of the drilling season.
- Field Work:
- Operate attenuator truck, Geotech section drilling equipment, falling weight deflectometer, and pavement profiling equipment.
- Collect and analyze field data – assist with sampling and testing materials.
- Winter Activities
- Snow removal at the Division office.
- General upkeep of the warehouse building and office building.
Minimum Qualifications
- Associate degree in civil technology and two years of related highway/transportation construction and engineering experience
- OR Four years of related highway/transportation construction and engineering experience.
- Bachelor’s degree in Construction Management or Engineering may substitute for the required work experience.
- Requires a valid North Dakota Class B drivers permit by the first day of work. The employee will have 6 months to obtain a North Dakota Class B driver’s license.
- Overnight travel is required for this position.
