UTILITY WORKER

DEPARTMENT OVERVIEW

The Public Works Department is the largest department within the City of Astoria. Major areas of responsibility include: Water Treatment and Distribution: Waste water Collection and Treatment; Street Maintenance; Engineering Services; Sanitation; Fleet Maintenance for all City Vehicles; Forestry Management; City Facility Maintenance; Railroad Maintenance; and Mapping with Geographic Information Systems (GIS).

SUMMARY

Utility Workers perform a variety of semiskilled and skilled tasks in the construction, maintenance and repair of public works facilities. An employee in this position is responsible for working as a member of a crew on street, water and sewer projects and may work independently on selected jobs. May provide supervision to temporary employees. The position will be hired as a Utility Worker I or II depending on the candidate's qualifications. SCHEDULE

The regular schedule for this position is full-time, Monday - Friday, 8:00AM-4:30PM and will be subject to 24-hour call out, 7 days a week in the event of emergencies.

KEY QUALITIES

• Experience with hand tools, power tools, and the operation of light and heavy construction equipment.
• Knowledge of general construction practices and safety precautions.
• Ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions.
• Ability to perform heavy manual labor in sometimes adverse weather conditions.
• Ability to learn operations related to water, sewer and streets.

PAY

Utility Worker I $21.70-26.38 per hour.

Utility Worker II $24.05-29.23 per hour.

Pay rate will be dependent on experience.
