Position Title: Veterinary Assistant

Position Summary: The veterinary assistant will support the veterinary services department in their daily tasks by cleaning and maintaining equipment, feeding, preparing and sanitizing surgery suites, restraining and handling patients, performing intake exams and completing clerical and administrative work. This is a crucial role in ensuring that the daily operations of the Veterinary Services department run smoothly.

Salary: Pay starts at $18 to $20/hr

About CCS: The Cat Care Society was founded in 1981 by Linda East, DVM and Lynn Rowe. We are a non-profit that was established to improve the quality of life for home, injured and abused cats in the Denver Metro area. We are a cage free, limited admission facility that provides refuge for more than 75 cats until their forever homes are found. We are proud to serve as a haven and resource for cats that many of our shelter partners are unable to support. We pride ourselves on finding homes for cats with special needs.

Role Responsibilities:

  • Assist technicians and veterinarians in the performance of medical and surgical procedures
  • Administer medications and vaccines as directed to shelter animals
  • Perform intake exams on incoming cats
  • Clean, disinfect, and maintain surgical and medical areas according to best practices
  • Maintain medical equipment and supplies, support inventory management
  • Handle and move animals prior to and following medical procedures, restraining animals as needed
  • Perform data entry to update animal records
  • Contribute to and lead initiatives to improve processes and procedures
  • Identify, assist with and be able to perform sample diagnostic testing as directed
  • Making internal and external patrons and their needs a primary focus is expected in all situations
  • This position interacts with and collaborates with employees at all levels of the organization.
  • Treats people and animals with respect; contributes to effective teamwork; promotes intra- and inter-departmental cooperation; and fosters public relations beneficial to Cat Care Society.

Qualifications:

  • 1 year of working as a veterinary assistant (shelter experience a plus) or 1 year experience working in professional animal setting with a focus on animal handling, vaccine and medication administration
  • Knowledge of animal breed, behavior, and handling
  • Proven organizational, time management, and planning skills required
  • Ability to communicate skillfully and effectively with a culturally diverse staff, volunteers, and community in a professional, pleasant, and respectful manner at all times
  • Maturity with ability to use good judgment and display a professional manner
  • Good analytical skills and ability to identify and access department issues/opportunities
  • Enjoys problem solving within existing resources; does not rely on additional dollars to resolve problems
  • Track record of fostering a positive work environment

Schedule: 40 hours per week, must work one weekend day
