Reporting to the President, the Vice President for University Relations and Marketing leads the development and implementation of Oregon State University’s comprehensive communications, marketing, and public affairs strategies in direct support of OSU’s mission and strategic plans and its aspirations to be one of the nation’s leading land grant research universities.

The Vice President must demonstrate a strong level of expertise and commitment to leading modern best practices and branded institutional internal and external communications; integrated brand marketing, developing and expanding the university’s social media presence; stewarding institutional public affairs; attracting and developing outstanding marketing, communications and related staff; demonstrating the university’s reputation for excellence; and supporting the growth and impact of marketing efforts in service to the university’s strategic priorities.
Working closely with OSU’s leadership, the vice president provides a bold and dynamic vision for articulating OSU’s areas of distinction and for establishing and assessing goals and outcomes, target audiences, and strategies for OSU’s communications, marketing, and public affairs efforts. In this highly collaborative role, the vice president supports university leaders, OSU communications and marketing professionals across the university, and key partners in telling OSU’s story and contributing to its aspirational growth and success.
The Vice President is charged with leading efforts to elevate and distinguish knowledge of OSU among diverse regional, national and international audiences, including the general public; the media; higher education, government and non-profit leaders; prospective students and their families; alumni, donors and OSU stakeholders; and business and industry. This includes all counties and diverse communities in Oregon as part of OSU’s land grant mission. The vice president is responsible for ensuring these efforts advance the university’s inclusive excellence mission and are culturally responsive and relevant to diverse internal and external communities served by the university.
The Vice President serves as chief communications counsel and strategist to the president and university leadership.
The Vice President develops internal university communications strategies and ensures that the university is well-positioned to both respond to and anticipate issues that are likely to impact the OSU community. The Vice President is responsible for articulating and implementing a clear communication strategy for critical incidents and issues impacting the university community and coordinates closely with leadership and units across OSU to develop and deploy holistic public responses consistent with the university’s values and mission.
Units reporting to the Vice President include University Marketing; Web Communications; News and Research Communications; Executive and Internal Communications; Trademark Licensing; University Events; OSU Productions; the Public Records Office, the LaSells Stewart Center, Conference Services and Printing and Mailing Services.

75% – University Relations and Marketing
- Provide vision and lead the development and implementation of the university’s comprehensive communications, marketing, and public affairs strategies in collaboration with administrative, academic and OSU Foundation leadership to drive awareness and affinity among target audiences, and support enrollment, philanthropy, engagement, and public affairs goals.
- Evaluate and refine strategies and plans and periodically provide updates on progress to university leaders.
- Conduct attitudinal and related research to analyze the university’s reputational positioning and inform communications and marketing strategies and progress.
- Develop collaborative processes, structures, staffing, and resources required to implement communications, marketing and public affairs strategies and provide effective guidance for implementation across the university.
- Provide advice and counsel to university leaders on communication, crisis response, and public affairs matters that impact OSU’s reputation and contribute to greater knowledge and support of the university.
- Provide university partners with strategic marketing and creative communications guidance and support to advance their respective goals and coordinate institutional branding and messaging.
- Work closely with the university’s Vice President and Chief Diversity Officer and university leaders to ensure communication, marketing, and public affairs strategies advance the university’s inclusive excellence mission and are relevant to diverse internal and external communities.
- Work closely with the colleges, Enrollment Management, OSU-Cascades, Ecampus, INTO OSU, and other divisions to determine positioning strategy and develop marketing strategies to increase the enrollment of diverse, high-achieving student populations.
- Work closely with the colleges, Research Office, Government Relations, and industry relations staff to develop positioning and marketing strategies that increase the support for research broadly and in key focus areas and communicate the impact of research and innovation.
- Provide marketing and communications guidance, and support to OSU Foundation fundraising, stakeholder engagement, and alumni relations efforts, including the comprehensive fundraising campaign. Attend some Foundation or other fundraising/donor events in an official OSU capacity.
- Lead OSU’S brand management and related graphic identity efforts, including trademark licensing.
- Support the OSU Board of Trustees and the Board Office with effective executive communications, media relations, internal communications, public affairs services, and, as appropriate, marketing support.
- Serve as the university’s chief spokesperson or delegate that authority to a qualified member of the team.
- Serve on the Immediate Response Group to coordinate responses to critical incidents impacting the university.
- Chair the Architectural Naming Committee and Outdoor Art Committee.
- Serve as a member of other university committees, as appointed by the president and the provost and executive vice president.
25% – Supervision
- Supervises University Relations and Marketing staff and staff within the Public Records Office, LaSells Stewart Center, Conference Services and Printing and Mailing Services.
- Attract, develop, and retain outstanding marketing, communications, and related staff through a strategic vision for University Relations and Marketing.
- Dynamic communicator with superior interpersonal skills.
- Bachelor’s degree, plus five years of experience in fields related to the duties of this position.
- Visionary leader with the ability to direct comprehensive marketing, communications, and public relations strategies to advance university goals.
- Ability to lead organizational crisis and issue management communication.
- Demonstrable commitment to advancing diversity, equity, and inclusion.
- Successful experience leading large-scale strategic efforts and large teams within a complex, decentralized organization.

- Professional experience in higher education, particularly at an R1 land grant institution.
- Demonstrated understanding of current and emerging communications and marketing trends, practices, and platforms.
- Experience related to governmental relations, public affairs, and fundraising.
