Visiting Research Associate

Chemistry - Pennsylvania-Pittsburgh - (23002102)


The University of Pittsburgh is seeking a Visiting Research Associate to work with Professor Kay Brummond on mechanisms and application of dehydro-Diels–Alder cycloadditions. This appointment is anticipated to last 4 months.



In addition to the above-mentioned project, which is anticipated to be approximately 50% of the work, the incumbent would be expected to enthusiastically engage with graduate students within the group, working on problem-solving for day-to-day research questions and lab techniques. The incumbent would mentor graduate students and assist them with professional development.



A specific example of best practices for routine lab techniques in organic chemistry that the candidate should be very familiar with include:
  • Solvent and reagent purification
  • Reaction set up and work up
  • Reaction monitoring (e.g., TLC, GC, NMR)
  • Column chromatography
  • Recrystallization
  • Atmospheric and vacuum distillation
  • Spectra interpretation (e.g., 1H NMR, 13C NMR, 31P, 19F, HMBC and HSQC)
  • Melting points
  • Electronic notebooks


Specific examples of best practices that the candidate may coach and mentor graduate students on include:
  • Research presentation
  • Abstract preparation
  • Supporting information preparation
  • Interview preparation


Required qualifications for this position are a PhD in organic chemistry
