REPORTING RELATIONSHIP: Is directly responsible to the Director for Student Success Advising.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Responsible for assisting current students with programs, requirements, and procedures for course registration.
  • Responsible for acting as a liaison between campus departments and outside institutions of higher education regarding transfer trends and specific transfer issues.
  • Responsible for engaging in advising strategies to facilitate success of students on academic warning, probation, and reapplying for admission after academic suspension.
  • Responsible for outreach to target groups of current students, in collaboration with other campus departments, in order to support student registration and retention.
  • Responsible for providing academic advising support in preparation for and during student registration events for new, returning, and transfer students.

Position Description & Details


Assist current and prospective students – 40%

Serve as a point of contact for the Admissions & Enrollment Services Office to assist with prospective students regarding BSC programs, unofficial evaluation of transcripts, and degree progress. Prepare for and take a lead advising role at student registration events, serve as a point of contact for current students regarding BSC programs, degree progress and assistance with registration, take phone calls and walk-ins and to assists students in the resolution of questions and conflicts, assist students with the graduation application process and serve as a point of contact regarding transfer and employment opportunities after graduation, and assist with degree plans for students who are placed on financial aid disqualification, for students receiving education benefits from the US Department of Veterans Affairs, and for those receiving services from Job Service and Workforce Safety and Insurance.

Implement student retention strategies and advising services that support the success of students – 30%

Work with students requesting admission to BSC after academic suspension to determine their eligibility and develop a plan for returning to academic success, provide outreach to students on academic warning, probation and readmission from suspension addressing academic issues, connecting them with appropriate support services and notifying them of important semester milestones, review available data regarding student enrollment, retention, academic progress, transfer, and graduation rates, and contribute to the development and implementation of intervention strategies to support student enrollment, student success and student retention, support the educational, social, cultural, and emotional well-being of minority student groups on campus.

Coordinate, maintain, and disseminate materials used for advising – 10%

Support the Advisor Coordinator in maintaining and keeping up-to-date advising materials and in disseminating information to BSC students regarding dates and deadlines for registration, graduation applications, and encouragement to meet with advisors each semester.

Act as a liaison between campus departments and outside institutions – 10%

Work closely with faculty and staff regarding advising policies and procedures, attend regularly scheduled meetings with departments, offices, and campus committees relating to advising and transfer issues, work closely with Admissions & Enrollment Services, Academic Records, and other advisors, and serve as a campus contact for current information on transfer materials.

Miscellaneous duties – 10%

Support innovation, creativity, and ideas to improve/enhance processes, functions, etc. in the department and as a whole for the college, and perform other duties as assigned or required.

Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in social work, education, counseling, or a related field and one to three years’ experience working in an academic setting, supporting faculty and students.
    • Strong organizational skills, with the ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines.
    • Good computer software skills – Microsoft Office, email and electronic calendar and good keyboarding skills.
    • Sensitivity to cultural diversity and an understanding of minority related educational issues.
    • Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.
    • Ability to work with and present to diverse groups of individuals and good customer relation skills.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in education, business, counseling, or related field.
  • Experience in a similar position in higher education.
