Provide in-depth, specialized, and/or comprehensive advising to faculty and students regarding class choices, curriculum options, majors, departmental and University policies and procedures, and other academic needs.
Fully competent and productive professional contributor who applies acquired job skills, policies, and procedures to complete substantive assignments/projects/tasks of moderate scope and complexity. Works independently with general supervision; exercises judgment within defined guidelines and practices to determine appropriate action. May provide guidance and assistance to entry level professionals and/or support employees.
- Provide academic advising to first-year undeclared, pre-engineering, and engineering majors, focusing on:
- Advising of departmental, college, and university policies and procedures;
- Information on degree programs and creation of optimal lower-division academic plans;
- Monitoring of student progress;
- Eligibility and registration in Finish-in-Four program;
- First-term required advising (RAD) sessions (both individual and group);
- Educating first-year students about academic success practices; and,
- Assisting student success coordinators in outreach, services, and programming for specific student populations, including first-years, undeclared, transfers, academic at-risk, and/or international students.
- Make appropriate referrals to campus support services (e.g., career counseling, personal counseling, and financial aid).
- Provide advising support for various appeals processes, including academic reinstatements, academic adjustments, and satisfactory academic progress (SAP) for financial aid.
- Advise special populations of students, including new or first-term transfer students, undeclared majors, international students, etc., assisting in exploring academic programs, and focusing on academic progress, procedures, policies, and available academic resources.
- Utilize student-success tools and resources, including PeopleSoft, DegreeTracker, Student Success Dashboard, etc.
University-Wide Advising Initiatives
- Participates in the creation of new-student orientations and presents academic information to students and parents during orientation programming.
- Coordinate communication to students regarding registration, academic difficulties, required advising, and financial aid appeals.
- Participate in university committees and other activities that support the mission of the unit and the university.
- Participate in college outreach, including campus tours to prospective students and recruiting calls to female and under-represented students.
- Direct knowledge of university student development and academic advising
- Demonstrated ability to help students make informed and responsible decisions, identify achievable goals, develop practical thinking and learning strategies, and promote life management skills to meet present and future needs
- Skill and comfort with public speaking (preferably teaching)
- Experience working with students from diverse and underrepresented backgrounds
- Demonstrated ability to communicate complex academic requirements and policies
- Experience working collaboratively as a part of a team to achieve program, departmental, and university goals
- Excellent organizational, problem-solving, decision-making, and interpersonal skills
- Demonstrated commitment to ethical professional practice and behaviors
- Strong commitment to professional excellence and continuous improvement of programs, processes, and services
- Demonstrated ability to use technical/web-based support tools to ensure effectiveness
- Bachelor’s Degree and 2 years relevant professional experience or equivalent experience.
Preferred Qualifications:
Salary range of $45,905.60 to $48,000 annually, depending on experience.
