Job Summary and Qualifications

The Pharmacist shall perform drug procurement, drug packaging, patient billing, all aspects of drug compounding and distribution, and shall provide drug information and clinical service to health professionals and patients. A Clinical/Operations Specialist Pharmacist supervises Pharmacy Technicians, Interns, Students and Volunteers, and monitors all aspects of drug therapy in the facility. Pharmacy services require specialized skills and/or age-specific competencies, which include adult, geriatric, and pediatric patients from neonatal through adolescent ages. The delivery of Pharmacy services at NSMC is based upon criteria that are appropriate for the age of the patients served and includes aspects of care related to the safety of the individual patient. The Pharmacy Department provides services for patients in all age groups.

1) Performs drug procurement (inventories pharmacy stock, prepares drug purchase orders, orders drugs, borrows drugs, receives drugs and prepares products for final distribution, assures that drug inventories are adequate for existing need, makes recommendations where warranted to help control the drug budget).

2) Packages and labels drug products (unit-dose solids, liquids, parenteral solutions, bulk compounds, bulk reconstitution and extemporaneous compounding).

3) Processes medication orders and prescriptions, including related patient charges (receives orders and prescriptions, labels, maintains medication profiles, reconstitutes prefabricated oral medications, compounds parenteral admixtures, and assures the accurate and timely dispensing of medications).

4) Supervises other staff in accordance with applicable law. Facilitates daily operational workflow to use department personnel in the most efficient manner. Assists in the training and orientation of new staff and extern students. Observes, supervises, and provides feedback to pharmacy techs/interns to ensure quality and adherence to facility P&Ps.

5) Identifies, monitors, intervenes, and documents interventions related to medication order processing, as appropriate. These interventions include the identification of drug interactions and adverse drug reactions. Assists in maintaining a closed Formulary at NSMC. Works with physicians on therapeutic alternatives where available.

6) Performs clinical pharmacy functions (addresses clinical pharmacist workflow activations, clinical report review pharmacokinetic assessments and consults, participates in interdisciplinary patient rounding, actively participates in patient medication counseling, patient satisfaction rounding, and the documentation of both). Provides input regarding department clinical pharmacy functions to improve clinical care to patients.

7) Utilizes appropriate resources in problem solving (people, literature, etc).

8) Assumes responsibility for ongoing professional development. Actively seeks and obtains continuing education in aspects of drug therapy as defined by State law and department P&P.

9) Performs duties/projects as assigned in the best interest of the department. Active participation in the development of project areas designed to better the department’s overall operation is required.

10) Demonstrates good communications skills (reports the status of incomplete orders/projects to ensure continuity; provides upward/downward communication in problem prone situations; exercises judgment in determining when to involve department leadership; provides adequate documentation of out-of-the-ordinary events via the occurrence report mechanism; communicates with appropriate staff with respect to scheduling/time-off/tardiness, etc.; answers the telephone in a timely manner, conveys/receives information in an accurate manner; consults with coworkers when appropriate).

11) Consistently fulfills position requirements with a conscientious degree of accuracy and care. Demonstrates a proactive attitude, seeking to remedy situations before they arise. Reports quality concerns to his/her immediate supervisor. Documents events via the risk management module of the clinical patient care system.

12) Demonstrates a willingness to start projects and accept job responsibilities related to areas of expertise. Is willing to further develop areas of expertise.

13) Ensures that the conduct of himself/herself is in accordance with Corporate Ethics and Compliance policies and procedures.

14) Performs other duties as assigned.

A. Interaction with Other Departments. The Clinical/Operations Specialist Pharmacist:

1) Provides drug information to health care professionals and patients (receives drug information requests, researches and responds to questions, provides medication in-services as determined).

2) Monitors and intervenes in all aspects of drug therapy (evaluates drug and lab orders to determine the potential for adverse effects, toxicity, sub-therapeutic effects, drug interactions, incompatibilities, etc.; notifies health care providers of problems in drug therapy).

Provides clinical services to health care professionals, patients, and families (responds to Code Blue/Code White/Trauma/Clinical Assessment Team, reviews adverse drug reactions, provides clinical consult when requested).


What qualifications you will need:
  • Licensure with the Colorado State Board of Pharmacy.

  • Previous experience in Hospital Pharmacy, as a Pharmacist, preferred.

  • Bachelor of Science, Pharmacy, or Doctor of Pharmacy degree required.
