This position is located in the Office of Agro-Consumer Services, Weights and Measures Division. The Weights and Measures Division regulates many aspects of commerce and trade in the state. The division ensures that equity prevails in the marketplace for both buyers and sellers by inspecting over 100,000 commercial weighing, measuring, metering, and scanning devices annually. In addition, any commodity sold by weight, measure, or count is subject to inspection to ensure consumers are getting what they pay for. Items inspected include food and dairy products, household products, gardening products, firewood, and hundreds of other products purchased daily by consumers and businesses.
Incumbent of this position is responsible for a specific region of the state which includes parishes:
Southeast Region (Hammond/New Orleans)- Jefferson, Livingston, Orleans, Plaquemines, St. Bernard, St. Helena, St. Tammany, Tangipahoa, Washington.
Incumbent for this position is responsible for supervising and training Agricultural Specialist District Supervisors in assigned region in all areas of enforcement, investigation and judicial procedures, inspection certification, and all other aspects of Weights and Measures laws, rules, and regulations. Supervision for this position is received from the Agricultural Specialist Program Manager.
General Duties and Supervisory Responsibilities
Supervises, trains, and evaluates the performance of Agricultural Specialist District Supervisors in
assigned region in training and supervision of inspectors, and in all areas of enforcement, investigation, and judicial proceedings as related to state and federal laws governing scale inspection, certification, labeling, and all other aspects of Weights and Measures laws, rules and regulations.
Regularly conducts routine Scale, Motor Fuel, Price Verification, and Package Inspections throughout their assigned region.- Periodically works specific areas in the absence of Agriculture Specialists or Agriculture Specialist District Supervisor.
- Ensures that Placed in Service Reports for assigned Region are completed in a timely manner.
- Quarterly ride along with District Supervisors and randomly observes Agriculture Specialists. Reviews inspection reports for consistency and quality control purposes.
- Ability to use inspection and registration data lists to evaluate Regional workload completion levels.
- Ability to correctly edit Google Sheets and Docs documents being worked on collaboratively.
- Manages the general operations within the assigned region.
- Manages the makeup of the Districts within the assigned region over time.
- Maintains regular personal, telephone, and electronic contact with federal, state, and local government agencies' field personnel, private industry, and public or private groups or individuals concerned with scale, package, motor fuel, and price verification inspections in their assigned region.
- Promotes prevention of violations and provides or obtains information concerning penalties for violations and follows appropriate procedures outlined by the Program Manager for the reporting and handling of violations.
- Provides enforcement training for Agricultural Specialists relative to reporting and handling of violations, and coordinates with Program Managers to create solutions for unique problems on a case by case basis.
- Regularly transfers Weights and Measures priorities for the assigned Region to Agriculture Specialist District Supervisors and ensures that the Agriculture Specialists workloads are being effectively prioritized and equally distributed.
- Participates in preparation of cases and testifies at commission hearings.
- Provides leadership and support to Agricultural Specialist District Supervisors relative to investigations and enforcement activities related to their areas of responsibility.
- Conducts regular compliance inspections at locations where more serious violations of laws, rules and regulations have previously occurred.
- Serves as lead community relations liaison for Weights and Measures assigned to the region relative to the promotion and development of strong enforcement.
- Participates in professional development opportunities, to stay current with technology, as well as other related data.
- Participates in Weights and Measures specific professional development opportunities such as Basic and Professional Competency evaluation exams and classes provided by either the Division of Weights and Measures, The National Conference on Weights and Measures or The National Institute of Standards and Technology.
- Successfully maintains minimum number of competency credentials_
- Coordinate regional trainings that provide professional development opportunities for regional staff based on needs identified.
