ANIMAL CONTROL OFFICER
JOB SUMMARY
Salary: $17/hr or commensurate with experience
Hours: Monday-Thursday 7:30am to 5:30pm, Friday: 7:30-11:30am
On call and occasional weekends required
This job is a non-exempt full time position within the Police Department – Animal Shelter & Control Unit of the City of Mustang and is directed and administered by the Police Department. The incumbent provides services to the City of Mustang by operating the City of Mustang Animal Shelter, performing Animal Control Officer duties in the community and enforcing law and ordinances related to the keeping, welfare, treatment, and control of disease of animals and the safety of persons within the City of Mustang.
Required for this position:
The skills, knowledge, and ability to;
- Possess a valid Oklahoma Motor Vehicle Operator license with a clean driving record
- Be able to pass an in depth background investigation
- Be available after normal working hours and on weekends and holidays to perform animal control and shelter duties
- Possess good English language speaking, spelling and grammar skills
- Provide better than acceptable customer service in person, by writing or telephone
- Be able to perform basic mathematics tasks
- Work with computers, other office equipment and specialized animal control/shelter tools
- Solve problems or ask questions when a task is unclear
- Follow directions with and without supervision
- Lift moderately heavy objects or animals
- Recognize certain behaviors/conditions in animals
- Learn and understand veterinary medical terminology and minor procedures
Duties and Responsibilities:
The Animal Control/Shelter Officer’s duties and responsibilities entail the following, including but not limited to:
Providing basic animal control and shelter services for the City of Mustang and enforce state law and city ordinance by issuing citations or taking other corrective action as needed.
Maintain safety for him/her self and that of the public and of the animals placed in the Officer’s care.
Perform animal care and treatment, maintain shelter cleanliness, and provide good customer service.
Possess basic knowledge of contagious animal diseases/conditions and isolation protocol.
Have or be able to learn proper techniques of animal handling; including proper restraint techniques, proper safety protocol when walking/handling an animal, kenneling an animal, administering medication, feeding, watering, and exercising an animal.
Have the ability to maintain personal confidence and safety around animals.
Be able to have hands on contact with the animals in the community or shelter, and provide properly for their well being.
Possess a working knowledge of domestic animal behavior, as well as some limited experience with goats, pigs, chickens and small domestic rodents.
Clean up after animals both inside and outside the facility to include the cleaning of animal kennels, cages, litter pans, water bowls, food dishes, beds/ bedding, carriers etc.
Maintain the Animal Shelter building as a whole (inside and out) by performing tasks including, but not limited to, sweeping/mopping/vacuuming floors, wiping counters, taking out trash, cleaning bathrooms, cleaning windows and doors, putting away clean laundry, rotating and proper food storage, checking and replacing equipment and supplies including garbage bags, paper towels, toilet paper, tissue etc. using disinfectant equipment.
The duties and responsibilities described above are not limited to only what is listed. Some tasks may be added/removed or modified as deemed necessary for the safety and well being of shelter staff, animals, volunteers and public visitors.
The ability to frequently walk, stoop, kneel, or crouch, lift or move up to 50 pounds, and regularly stand for extended periods.
Must possess a valid Oklahoma Motor Vehicle Operator License with a good driving record and be able to drive an Animal Control equipped pickup truck in all weather conditions.

This position is supervised, managed and directed by the Animal Welfare Supervisor.
