Wake County - the nation’s third fastest growing county - is seeking an Assistant County Manager to help tackle the many opportunities and challenges that come with rapid growth and urbanization. The Wake County Manager’s Office, led by nationally acclaimed County Manager David Ellis and a staff of four deputy managers, is responsible for managing Wake County’s daily operations, assisting the Board of Commissioners with policy development, and planning new programs and policies to achieve long-term goals. In particular, the Assistant County Manager will oversee the key areas of regional transit planning and economic development, in addition to leading and supporting various special projects and initiatives. Wake County is currently working with partners to expand transit services to ensure all county residents have access to frequent, reliable and high-quality public transit through initiatives like the county’s first-ever Bus Rapid Transit line, which is currently in development. With 64 new people relocating to Wake County every day, the county partners with stakeholder groups to drive economic development initiatives such as workforce development, expanded educational opportunities, and infrastructure investment.

Essential Functions;
Oversees organizational functions on behalf of the County Manager. Portfolio of assignments may include, but are not limited to, regional transit planning and economic development. Coordinate policy development and projects, communication materials, advocate for county needs
Build and maintain effective working relationships with community agencies and intergovernmental partners regarding operational areas, organization priorities and community needs/issues. Provides information and assistance to community organization as needed
Provides financial oversight of assigned operational areas including contract negotiation and oversight, budget development, long-term financial planning and policy development
Lead special projects. Research and prepare recommendations on selected policy issues requested by the County Manager or Commissioners. Build consensus among team members
Engages with community agencies and intergovernmental partners regarding operational areas, organization priorities and community needs/issues. Provides information and assistance to community organization as needed. Represents Wake County in community meetings
Serve in assigned County project teams, Manager’s Office administrative roles, back-up roles and temporary roles. Examples include assisting with agenda development, correspondence, Emergency Operations Center Liaison role, management of interns
About Our Team
The Wake County Manager's Office is responsible for executive leadership of all County departments and agencies. The Office works closely with the elected Board of County Commissioners and County departments to implement data-driven strategies and policies. Other responsibilities include implementing the Board's goals, coordinating regional efforts with community partners, and overseeing departmental operations.
The Basics (Required Education and Experience)
Bachelor's degree in Public Administration, Public Policy or Business Administration
Five years of job-related experience
Beyond the Basics (Preferred Education and Experience)
Master’s degree
8 years in local government budgeting, policy analysis, executive management or Board support

Able to advance County projects and discussions through effective relationship building, focus on shared outcomes, and use of informal authority
Able to facilitate crucial conversations about process or policy among staff and/or Commissioners
Ability to communicate complex policy and procedural issues and decisions in a concise, but accurate, manner
Able to effectively draft, review and edit policy documents and provide constructive criticism
Ability to communicate clear expectations to supervised staff
Able to learn and become competent with specialized software platforms, including agenda development software, appointments management, and remote meeting applications
About This Position
Location: Justice Center Raleigh, NC
Employment Type: Regular
Work Schedule: Mon - Fri 8:30 am - 5:30 pm Occasional work outside of normal business hours
Hiring Range: $105,000 to $135,000
