Responsibilities
The Laboratory for Laser Energetics (LLE) at the University of Rochester is a unique national resource with two premier high-power laser facilities for research in inertial confinement fusion (ICF), high-energy-density physics (HEDP), and basic science. The Omega facility is home to the OMEGA and OMEGA EP lasers. OMEGA is a 60-beam solid-state laser system capable of delivering 30-kJ in 60 nanosecond UV pulses to a target for fusion experiments. Omega EP is a laser system capable of delivering both multi-kJ nanosecond UV pulses and IR short-pulses of up to 1-PW power (700J in 700fs). LLE is also developing novel high-energy laser systems, including ultrabroadband and ultra-intense lasers.
LLE is seeking a talented individual to join our team as OMEGA EP Associate Laser Facility Manager. As ALFM you will assist the Laser Facility manager in overseeing operations and experiments performed in the state-of-the-art OMEGA EP Laser Facility. You will work with a diverse group of technicians, engineers, laser scientists and experimental physicists as we maintain and upgrade the facility and perform an ever-growing variety of experiments.
Responsibilities
- Qualify as Shot Director (operations shift leader) and sit watch overseeing the execution of experiments and other planned day to day activities.
- Manage and deconflict facility maintenance activities around planned shots on a weekly basis.
- Participate in reviews of upcoming experiments and activities and address specific complications to guarantee efficient and effective achievement of goals without threats to system or personal safety.
- Coordinate support from external engineering groups in troubleshooting and resolving component failures and other problems preventing execution of planned activities.
- Evaluate system effectiveness and availability at the conclusion of campaigns identifying areas where improvement is necessary and problematic components or subsystems.
- Work with other members of the facility management team to evolve facility policies, documents, and operating procedures.
- Review and approve changes to operating procedures suggested by subsystem groups and operators.
- Attend reviews of proposed new and changes to existing facility equipment representing the perspective and needs of operations personal.
- Coordinate the integration, testing and qualification of new equipment and upgrades with operators and external engineering groups
- Work with Laser System Scientists to plan and execute facility shots and activities in support of system upgrades, testing and maintenance.
- Attend, and when needed, serve as Laser Facility management representation in meetings where facility operations matters are addressed including Principal Investigator briefings, Pre-watch briefings, Staff meetings, Facility Scheduling meetings, safety walkthroughs, etc.
- Provide Principal Investigator and Instrument Specialist training to internal and external users including facility access approvals and safety access trainings
- Provide training to new personal qualifying as Shot Director or other subordinate watch stations.
- Morning and evening shift work is required
A Successful Candidate possess:
- Ability to learn understand technical details of complex systems in multiple disciplines.
- Ability to manage multiple projects and priorities in a fast-paced, dynamic research environment.
- Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, and the ability to work closely with scientists, engineers, technicians, and students.
- Demonstrated ability to be effective in a team environment.
- Familiarity with lasers, optics, scientific diagnostics, electronics, or operations in a production environment.
Qualifications
- Hold a bachelor's degree in a STEM field
- At least 5 years' experience in a technical field is desired
- Ability to obtain a DOE security clearance and willingness to participate in campaigns involving classified information
