Overview
Hudson Valley Justice Center (HVJC) is a not-for-profit law firm serving low income immigrants in the Hudson Valley. We handle a broad range of civil legal matters, including housing, immigration, family law, public benefits, disability, consumer, and employment law. HVJC is currently the only organization representing non-citizens in eviction proceedings in Westchester, Orange, Dutchess, Putnam, Sullivan, and Ulster Counties. In addition to individual matters, HVJC handles class actions, participates in community organizing, and fights for legislative change that promotes equal access to justice. The unique racial, cultural, and social perspectives of HVJC’s staff enhances culturally competent services to clients. Position
HVJC has an immediate opening for a full time Paralegal position serving clients in Westchester. The position will be based in our White Plains Office and will support HVJC’s Eviction Prevention Project, with a special focus on cases filed in Ossining and Tarrytown.
Responsibilities:
- Observing weekly court proceedings and completing intakes for tenants in Ossining and Tarrytown Housing Courts.
- Providing a range of supportive services to clients.
- Referring clients to other agencies and service providers.
- Providing clients with general legal information and resources.
- Partnering with HVJC attorneys on active cases to enhance service delivery.
- Some limited case handling under the supervision of an attorney is required.
- Must adhere to program standards, funder requirements, and the highest professional standards.
- Attendance at evening court proceedings in Ossining is required.
- Travel to various outreach locations in addition to the Ossining and Tarrytown Courts is required.
Requirements:
- Associates Degree or equivalent work and/or volunteer experience
- Spanish/English Bilingual
- Experience with Microsoft Office environment (Word, Excel, Outlook etc.) and ability to maintain detailed records
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Valid Driver’s license and access to a vehicle
Preferred:
- Experience working with ethnically, culturally, and economically diverse populations
- Four-year degree
- Paralegal Certificate
NOTE: HVJC accommodates hybrid work. Candidates are expected to meet with clients and attorneys, sometimes assisting with in-person translations in client meetings and at various local courts. Candidates must have a valid driver’s license and reliable transportation.
