Job Summary
The Bowdoin Store Associate works as part of the Bowdoin Store team to provide excellent customer service. This role plays a part in the successful operation of the Bowdoin Store through the point of sale; customer assistance; security; keeping the store neat, clean, and attractive; assistance with receiving, stocking, merchandising, and web sales. In addition, this role will assist the Textbook/Mail Center and all other areas of the operation as needed.
  • Uses computerized POS system to process customer sales and returns transactions. These may be cash, checks, charge, debit, College One Card and Polar Plus, department charges, and/or gift cards.
  • Participates in position coverage for daily breaks, lunches, employee absences, vacations, and during special events.
  • Maintains orderliness and cleanliness of all retail, storage and office locations. Tasks include but are not limited to dusting, sweeping, cleaning display units, vacuuming, picking up debris, recycling and disposing of packing materials.
  • Hourly rate for this position is $17.00/ per hour

Education/Skills Requirements
High School Diploma or GED required; an Associate’s degree is preferred.

Applicants must demonstrate superior customer service and communication skills and have a friendly, helpful, outgoing demeanor. Candidates must be self-starters who are productive during slow business periods and can work at a quick and efficient pace when it is busy. Applicants must be flexible, dependable, punctual and courteous. Basic computer skills are required. Experience with point of sale systems is preferred.

Bowdoin Store employees are expected to be well groomed and meet department standards for professional attire. This role will require a pre-placement physical and criminal background check.

Experience Requirements and/or Equivalents
Previous experience in shipping/receiving, retail operation, and/or textbook or general book operation, especially in a college environment is very helpful.

Standard Work Days and Hours
This is a non-benefits eligible, part-time position, up to 19 hours a week. Schedules will be based on the needs of the operation. Typical schedules may vary and be between Monday through Friday during store hours of 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., including some weekend coverage. Required to work additional hours during all major College events and weekends.
